Kacey Musgraves has sparked a fierce online backlash after turning her birthday wish into an appeal for immigrant children. The American country singer paused her Middle of Nowhere tour opener in Chicago, US, and asked fans to donate to an organisation supporting children whose parents have been deported. This prompted critics to question why she was not focusing on families affected by crimes allegedly committed by undocumented immigrants.

The moment came as Musgraves celebrated her 38th birthday at the United Center on Friday, 21 August. While the crowd responded with cheers, the request quickly became a political flashpoint online, despite her saying: 'It's not a political thing. It's just, these kids need help.'

Asking Fans To Help Immigrant Children

Musgraves briefly stopped the Chicago concert to make what she described as a birthday wish—asking fans to donate to the Young Center for Immigrant Children's Rights.

'It's a wonderful organisation, and they help give aid — legal aid — and money to children whose parents have been deported unfairly,' she told the audience.

She went on to explain that children can be left without their parents or a familiar support system following deportation. 'They have no guidance and no way to get through this thing without their homebase or their parents. So anyway, 50 cents, whatever the hell, I don't know, whatever you want to do but that would mean a lot to me,' the singer stated, before adding: 'If you don't want to, that's totally fine too.'

The Young Center advocates for immigrant children who are separated from their families or are otherwise navigating the US immigration system. Musgraves' appeal was met with applause at the concert, but the reaction was far more divided once clips of the moment circulated online.

Critics Question Who Deserves Support and Donations

The backlash largely centred on critics who felt Musgraves was overlooking Americans affected by crimes allegedly committed by undocumented immigrants.

One asked: 'How about donating to the parents of children raped/murder/trafficked by illegals who should be deported?!'

Another critic questioned why Musgraves was supporting children affected by deportation, arguing that their families had put them at risk by entering the US illegally. Another asked whether the singer would make the same appeal for families whose daughters had allegedly been victims of violent crimes committed by undocumented immigrants.

The criticism also spilled into calls for boycotts.

A comment read: 'People need to stop giving money to these pieces of sh***, and I'm talking about the likes of Kacey Musgraves, don't buy her music, don't go to her concerts.' Another user wrote: '@kaseymusgraves is off my list and whoever she grifts off of as an opening act will be off my list.'

However, not everyone agreed with the backlash. One supporter pointed out that the donation was completely optional, adding: 'It's not like our taxes where we have no choice in funding unnecessary wars. And they're children, how are you all not grasping that?'

Another Viral Moment From Musgraves' Tour

The charity appeal is not the only reason Musgraves' new tour has grabbed attention.

Her Middle of Nowhere opening night also went viral thanks to a cheeky stage prop. The singer performed atop a pair of enormous, glitter-covered disco balls that appeared to resemble male anatomy. The unusual setup quickly became a talking point online.
