Katherine Heigl has handled enough fictional medical emergencies to know that some shocks require immediate treatment. Unfortunately, there was no cure available when a teenage Grey's Anatomy fan accidentally added an entire generation to her age.
The actress, who famously played Dr. Izzie Stevens on the long-running medical drama, Grey's Anatomy, once found herself face-to-face with a 17-year-old fan who knew the character but somehow failed to recognise the woman who played her. Instead, the teenager landed on another explanation entirely: perhaps Heigl is Izzie's mother.
Heigl recalled the hilariously brutal encounter while reuniting with former Grey's Anatomy co-star Ellen Pompeo for Variety's Actors on Actors in 2023. What began with an excited young fan quickly became an age check that the doctor never ordered.
Katherine Heigl Wasn't Prepared for This Diagnosis
According to Heigl, the teenager's father approached her first and explained that his daughter was 'kind of freaking out' before asking whether the actress would speak to her. Heigl happily agreed. The fan then asked whether she knew Grey's Anatomy, followed by the more specific question of whether she knew Izzie Stevens.
Considering Heigl spent years playing the surgical intern-turned-resident, the answer was obviously yes.
Then the teenager delivered the plot twist. 'Are you her mother?' she asked.
Heigl immediately responded by asking the fan's age. Upon learning she was 17, the actress jokingly declared: 'Go away. Don't ever talk to me again.'
Pompeo's reaction made the accidental roast even better, as she burst into laughter while her former co-star recounted the unexpected encounter. Nothing like an innocent age check to remind you how long you've been iconic, right?
Grey's Anatomy Has Entered Its Second Generation
In the teenager's defence, Grey's Anatomy has now been treating patients and emotionally destabilising viewers for more than two decades.
The ABC medical drama premiered in 2005, introducing audiences to Pompeo's Meredith Grey, Heigl's Izzie Stevens and their fellow surgical interns at what was then Seattle Grace Hospital.
Heigl remained one of the central stars until her departure from the show in 2010. Her performance as Izzie also earned her the Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in 2007.
Meanwhile, the series kept going long after Izzie hung up her scrubs. That longevity means younger viewers can now meet the original doctors through streaming years after their episodes first aired, creating the unusual experience of teenagers becoming fans of characters who debuted before they were born.
Paging Dr. Izzie's Mother
For Heigl, that longevity apparently comes with an occupational hazard no medical drama could have prepared her for: being mistaken for the parent of her own character.
It may have been a hilarious diagnosis for the actress' ego, but the mix-up is also a rather impressive testament to Grey's Anatomy's staying power. Izzie Stevens has officially been around long enough for a new generation to discover her without immediately recognising the actress behind the scrubs. Fortunately, Heigl took the accidental ageing with a laugh.
After all, playing Izzie's mother would require quite the casting twist. Being mistaken for her apparently only requires one 17-year-old with a prescription for brutal honesty.
