Kelly Ripa has revealed the bizarre way she injured her back, admitting she hurt herself while sitting on a hotel toilet and reaching for toilet paper.
The Live with Kelly and Mark host, 55, shared the story during a behind-the-scenes moment from the daytime programme, describing the incident as 'really embarrassing' before demonstrating exactly how a simple reach left her with a back injury.
Ripa said she and her husband and co-host, Mark Consuelos, were staying at a hotel when she encountered an unexpected problem with the bathroom layout. The toilet tissue was positioned on the opposite side from where she normally expected it to be, forcing her to reach across while seated.
Kelly Ripa Reveals the Unusual Injury
Ripa began by telling audience members that she had recently hurt her back, but said the circumstances were difficult to explain without sounding ridiculous.
'It's really embarrassing,' she said.
She then asked the audience to guess how she had injured herself.
'Guess how I hurt my back? Sitting on a toilet,' Ripa revealed, prompting laughter from those around her.
Rather than simply recounting what happened, Ripa demonstrated the movement that caused the injury. She explained that toilet tissue would normally be positioned on one side of the toilet.
'Typically the toilet tissue is on this side, like a normal person,' she said, gesturing towards one side as she sat on a chair.
But during the hotel stay, the toilet roll was positioned on the opposite side.
'We were staying at a hotel; it was over here,' she explained, indicating the other side.
Ripa then showed how she reached across with her right arm to grab the toilet paper.
'So I went like that and hurt my back,' she said.
The presenter appeared to find the situation as amusing as her audience did, particularly because of how ordinary the movement had been.
'Yeah, I said it,' she joked. 'I hurt my back sitting on a toilet. Okay?'
The Hotel Toilet Paper Was Positioned Differently
According to Ripa's account, the injury happened because the toilet paper holder was located on the opposite side from the position she was accustomed to.
That meant she had to twist and reach across her body while sitting down.
Ripa did not say that she had fallen, slipped or suffered any other accident in the bathroom. Her explanation was much simpler: she reached for the toilet paper and hurt her back. She also did not provide details about the severity of the injury, whether she sought medical treatment or how long she expected the discomfort to last.
That makes her own description important. While the incident left her with a back injury, there is no indication from her comments that she suffered a serious or lasting medical problem. Instead, Ripa chose to share the story as an amusing behind-the-scenes anecdote, turning an awkward moment into a joke for the audience.
It Comes After Ripa's Recent Surgery
The back injury comes shortly after Ripa returned to Live with Kelly and Mark following a six-week absence while she recovered from gum graft surgery.
Ripa returned to the programme on 8 September and later told PEOPLE she was 'so much better' after the procedure. She said the surgery had been necessary but admitted she had delayed it for five years.
The dental procedure was linked to gum recession, which Ripa previously attributed to over-brushing.
'I brush my teeth too much. It's a good-bad habit,' she said while discussing the issue on her Let's Talk Off Camera podcast.
Her latest injury is unrelated to the dental procedure and instead happened during the hotel stay she described in the behind-the-scenes clip.
Ripa Turns an Awkward Moment Into a Joke
Ripa has not suggested that the back injury has forced her to take another break from the programme. Instead, she appeared comfortable enough to recount the incident to the audience and recreate the movement that caused it.
The story also gives viewers another example of the presenter's willingness to share unexpectedly personal details on camera. From discussing her recent dental surgery to explaining how she managed to hurt her back reaching for toilet paper, Ripa has continued to turn everyday mishaps into on-air anecdotes.
For now, the most unusual detail remains the simplest one: Ripa says she hurt her back while sitting on a toilet because the hotel toilet paper was positioned on the other side.
As she put it herself: 'I hurt my back sitting on the toilet. Okay?'
