Lea Michele is reportedly returning as Rachel Berry in the upcoming Glee reboot, but not everyone is celebrating the news. According to Variety, multiple sources have confirmed that the actress is expected to reprise her role in the Disney+ and Hulu revival of the hit musical series, which originally aired from 2009 to 2015.
While some fans are thrilled about Rachel's potential comeback, others have been quick to bring up the bullying allegations made against Michele by her former castmates. One social media user, Rose Dommu, responded to the casting report with a particularly scathing remark: 'satan will return as lucifer in dante's inferno'.
Another commenter wrote: 'Of course she's back. She's flopped at everything else.'
Fans Divided Over Lea Michele's 'Glee' Return
The announcement has sparked mixed reactions online, with critics questioning whether Michele deserves another opportunity to lead the series. One fan declared: 'And just like that I'm not watching the reboot.'
Another wrote: 'I think Disney is hoping we forgot.... But I tell you this, I sure didn't.' Others argued that the show would not feel complete without Michele, whose character was central to its original storyline.
'Glee isn't Glee without Rachel. It's her show for the most part,' one supporter commented. Another defended the actress, writing: 'You are aware people can grow right?'
Despite the divided response, Michele has previously expressed enthusiasm about revisiting the series. Speaking to E! News, she said: 'I love 'Glee.' I will always love 'Glee,'' adding that the programme remained close to her heart.
What Were the Bullying Allegations Against Lea Michele?
The controversy dates back to 2020, when former Glee actress Samantha Marie Ware publicly accused Michele of mistreating her during production. Ware, who played Jane Hayward in the show's sixth season, claimed Michele had made her first television acting experience a 'living hell'.
She also alleged that Michele had subjected her to racial microaggressions, including a disturbing remark about her wig. Other performers subsequently shared negative accounts of working with Michele.
The backlash prompted meal-kit company HelloFresh to terminate its partnership with the actress. Michele later issued a public apology, acknowledging that her conduct had hurt people while denying that she had judged colleagues because of their race.
'What matters is that I clearly acted in ways which hurt other people,' she wrote at the time.
The actress also promised to reflect on her behaviour and work towards becoming a better person.
What Do We Know About the 'Glee' Reboot?
The revival remains in its early stages, although creator Ryan Murphy has revealed that he has worked on a script with original collaborators Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan. Murphy previously told Entertainment Tonight that he had contacted approximately 10 original cast members about returning.
Heather Morris, who portrayed Brittany Pierce, and Chord Overstreet, who played Sam Evans, have also shared social media posts suggesting they could be involved. Neither Michele nor Murphy's representatives commented on the casting report when approached by Variety.
For now, the possibility of Rachel Berry's return has reignited a familiar debate among fans: whether nostalgia and second chances can coexist with accountability for past behaviour.
