Melissa Barrera has reflected on the lack of industry support she received following her dismissal from Scream 7 in 2023, contrasting her experience with the solidarity shown to rapper Macklemore after he was removed from Ed Sheeran's Loop Tour following his pro-Palestinian remarks.

Nearly three years later, the actress said she was moved by the response to Macklemore's removal from Sheeran's tour, particularly the decision by fellow musicians to withdraw in solidarity.
'It was so beautiful to see Finneas and the band and all the opening acts pulling out in support of Macklemore,' Barrera said as she explained that the response brought back memories of her own dismissal, when she felt comparable public support had been absent.
'It made me emotional, you know,' Barrera said. 'I didn't get that when it happened to me. I didn't have any of that happen. It was too soon. People were too scared.' The actress added that it was encouraging to see what she believes is a change in attitudes nearly three years later.
Her comments reflect her personal assessment of the entertainment industry's response rather than establishing that Hollywood as a whole has changed its approach to political expression.

Sheeran subsequently stated that the decision had been made by the promoter rather than by him personally. New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, whose company owns Gillette Stadium, acknowledged opposing Macklemore's participation. Kraft cited the rapper's recent actions and what he characterised as a broader history of antisemitic rhetoric and imagery.
Macklemore has rejected suggestions that his criticism of Israel amounts to criticism of Jewish people, explicitly distinguishing his opposition to Israeli government policies from antisemitism. The decision prompted several withdrawals from Sheeran's tour.
Scheduled support acts Finneas, Lukas Graham and Aaron Rowe withdrew in solidarity with Macklemore. Irish folk band Beoga, which had been performing as part of Sheeran's touring band rather than serving as an opening act, also withdrew.
Their decisions left Sheeran without his previously scheduled support acts and backing musicians for upcoming performances.
For Barrera, the musicians' willingness to give up professional opportunities was particularly significant. Unlike her experience in 2023, Macklemore's removal prompted fellow performers to publicly withdraw from scheduled appearances in protest.

The singer acknowledged the 7 October 2023 attacks in Israel while describing the situation in Gaza as 'catastrophic and unjustifiable'. Sheeran said he had not intended to become an activist musician but acknowledged the controversy surrounding Macklemore's removal and the pressure placed on performers and venues.
He opened the Philadelphia concert without a supporting act following the withdrawals. However, Sheeran did not perform the entire concert alone. He continued the show with a new backing band assembled after Beoga's departure.
The performance marked his first concert since the controversy and the subsequent withdrawal of his scheduled support acts and original backing musicians. Macklemore, meanwhile, announced on 16 September that he would donate $1 million in net earnings from Sheeran's tour to six organisations, providing humanitarian assistance to Palestinians.
The rapper also invited Kraft to match the contribution. The pledge added a financial dimension to the controversy, although Barrera's comments focused primarily on the solidarity demonstrated by Macklemore's fellow performers.
