Mia Goth has asked a Los Angeles court for sole legal and physical custody of her four-year-old daughter, Isabel, as she moves to formally end her marriage to Shia LaBeouf. The actress, 32, filed for divorce from LaBeouf, 40, on Tuesday, 6 October, citing irreconcilable differences and listing their separation date as 28 July 2025.

According to court documents reported by PEOPLE, Goth is requesting sole legal and physical custody of Isabel while asking that LaBeouf be granted visitation rights. She has also requested that neither she nor the actor be awarded spousal support, while asking that LaBeouf be granted visitation with their daughter.

Goth Wants To Be a 'Steady' Presence for Isabel

The filing comes around a year after Goth spoke openly about the profound effect becoming a mother had on her life. During an interview with ELLE in October 2025, the actress described motherhood as a 'really psychedelic experience' and spoke warmly about her bond with Isabel.

'It's a really psychedelic experience to have a child,' Goth said, explaining that she sometimes felt as though she was parenting both Isabel and the younger version of herself. She also called her daughter 'the greatest gift of my life' as she reflected on how becoming a mother had changed her perspective.

Goth was particularly candid about the kind of mother she hoped to be for Isabel as she grew older. 'I really hope to be something steady for her,' she said, explaining that she wanted her daughter to know she could always return to her regardless of what happened in her life.

The actress said she wanted Isabel to have a sense of security and somewhere to turn at every stage of her life. Goth said she wanted her daughter to always have 'a bed to sleep in and a home-cooked meal', regardless of how old she became.

In another particularly personal reflection, Goth said: 'More than anything, I'd say my daughter is my home.' She explained that motherhood had also 'informed a lot of my choices' and influenced the way she approached her work and life.

Goth and LaBeouf's Complicated Relationship

Goth and LaBeouf first met while working together on the 2013 film Nymphomaniac: Vol. II, beginning a relationship that would later become complicated. The pair held a wedding ceremony in Las Vegas in 2016, although officials later said the ceremony was not legally binding, and they announced their separation in 2018 before eventually reconnecting around 2020.

The couple welcomed Isabel in March 2022 after rekindling their relationship. However, Goth's new divorce petition lists 28 July 2025 as the date they separated, with reports of difficulties in their relationship emerging publicly several months later.

According to the divorce filing, Isabel has lived with Goth since the couple's separation. LaBeouf subsequently moved to New Orleans, and in June 2026 he pleaded guilty to three counts of simple battery stemming from a February Mardi Gras altercation.

LaBeouf was sentenced to two years of probation and ordered to complete an alcohol treatment programme following the guilty plea. Goth's divorce petition, however, cites irreconcilable differences and does not publicly state a reason for her request for sole custody.

Her Custody Request Comes With Visitation for LaBeouf

The custody filing marks a significant new chapter for Goth as she seeks to formally end her marriage and obtain sole legal and physical custody of their daughter. Her request for visitation for LaBeouf also means the filing is not, on its face, a request to completely remove him from Isabel's life.

As Goth seeks sole legal and physical custody of Isabel, her previous description of her daughter as 'my home' takes on added significance. The actress's custody request will be considered as part of the proceedings to formally bring her marriage to LaBeouf to an end.
