A single phone call has become one of the most disturbing details in a heartbreaking child neglect case in Michigan. Prosecutors allege that while seven-year-old Casper Jacob Shane O'Brien was in serious medical distress, his parents contacted a veterinarian to arrange treatment for their dog instead of seeking immediate medical care for their son.
That allegation now sits at the centre of a criminal case that has led to second-degree murder charges against Damien O'Brien, 40, and Jessica O'Brien, 41. Investigators say the events surrounding Casper's death have raised serious questions about the care he received in the years leading up to the tragedy.
The Phone Call That Shocked Investigators
Authorities say the events of 4 November 2025 took a devastating turn when police in Flint Township responded to reports of a child in distress. Casper was rushed to hospital in critical condition but later died.
As investigators pieced together what had happened that morning, prosecutors revealed one detail that immediately drew attention. According to Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton, the couple allegedly contacted their veterinarian to treat their dog while their young son was still in severe medical distress.
Investigators Reveal Lack of Medical Care
As the investigation continued, officials uncovered what they described as an alarming lack of medical attention throughout Casper's life. Prosecutor Leyton said the seven-year-old did not have a paediatrician and had reportedly been taken to a doctor only once.
He described the circumstances as 'cruel and extreme suffering from this child caused by the neglect of the parents'. Damien and Jessica O'Brien have both been charged with second-degree murder and are being held without bond at the Genesee County Jail ahead of their next court appearance.
His Medical Condition Raised Serious Concerns
Officials said Casper died from dilated cardiomyopathy, a disease that weakens and enlarges the heart muscle, making it harder for the heart to pump blood effectively. Medical experts note that severe obesity can contribute to the condition.
Investigators said Casper measured just over four feet tall and weighed 255 pounds at the time of his death. Health guidance from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates that a healthy weight for a child of his age and height would normally fall between about 50 and 73 pounds.
The Family Was Unknown to Authorities
The investigation also uncovered concerns beyond Casper's medical condition. According to Leyton, the couple have a five-year-old daughter, yet child protective services had never visited the home.
He made the striking observation that 'none of these kids even existed in the eyes of the government'. The comment highlighted how the family had reportedly remained outside the attention of agencies that might otherwise have identified signs of neglect much earlier.
Court Proceedings Are Now Underway
The criminal case is now moving through the Michigan court system. Both parents remain in custody without bond and are expected to appear in court on 2 July.
