Ballet flats have been having a fashion moment, but Miu Miu and New Balance are taking the trend somewhere considerably more expensive. Their latest 530 SL collaboration turns the pared-back trainer into a ballet-inspired flat, combining New Balance's sporty DNA with Miu Miu's distinctly polished approach to footwear.
The new New Balance X Miu Miu 530 SL ballerinas are available in two versions: white Deco' leather and cinnamon délavé suede. Both are priced at $1,170 in the US, €890 in Europe and £810 in the UK. That makes the latest release a particularly clear example of how a familiar sportswear silhouette can be repositioned as luxury fashion.
From Runner to Ballerina
Rather than simply adding ballet-inspired decoration to a conventional trainer, Miu Miu has altered the proportions and presentation of the 530 SL. The brand describes the design as combining the 'sporty essence' of the 530 SL with the silhouette of a ballet flat.
That distinction matters. The shoe has a low-profile appearance that sits much closer to the foot than a traditional running trainer. A laced upper, rubber sole and removable fabric-covered insole retain elements of its sneaker construction, while the overall shape pushes it towards the world of ballerinas. Miu Miu's branding appears on the upper, heel collar and insole.
The result is less a trainer decorated with ballet references and more a luxury flat built around a sneaker collaboration.
Two Materials, Two Different Moods
The white Deco' leather version offers the cleaner interpretation of the design, while the cinnamon délavé suede gives the silhouette a softer, more vintage-looking finish. Both versions use calfskin as their main material and are currently offered across a broad range of Italian sizes, from 34 to 46.
The material choices also help distinguish these from the technical appearance associated with conventional New Balance running shoes. Miu Miu's product descriptions emphasise the character of the leather and suede, while the construction remains deliberately lightweight.
That combination is central to the collaboration: recognisable sportswear codes are still present, but they have been reworked through a luxury-fashion lens.

The price is the most striking part of the release. At $1,170 in the US, the ballerinas sit firmly within luxury footwear rather than traditional New Balance territory. In Europe, Miu Miu lists both versions at €890, while its UK price is £810, making the official regional prices more useful than a currency conversion.
The price is also not an isolated figure within the collaboration. Miu Miu currently lists other 530 SL styles at higher and lower price points, including several sneaker versions at £890 and above on its UK site. One Deco' leather sneaker is listed at $1,290 on the US site, putting the new ballerina design $120 below that particular style.
That context makes the release more interesting than simply calling it an unusually expensive New Balance. It shows how extensively Miu Miu has repositioned the 530 SL within its own luxury footwear range, with the €890 European price placing the ballerina firmly within the brand's premium footwear offering.
Balletcore Meets Luxury Sportswear
The collaboration also reflects the continuing crossover between traditionally delicate footwear and sportswear.
