Fashion campaigns often rely on familiar faces and glamorous poses, but Mugler has taken a strikingly different route. The luxury house has replaced traditional supermodels with female bodybuilder Tatiana Horslaville to front its first dedicated handbag campaign, making strength, rather than conventional beauty, the centre of attention.
The campaign also marks a major milestone for creative director Miguel Castro Freitas, whose debut handbag collection introduces the Aurora and Lua designs. Together, they signal a fresh chapter for Mugler while staying true to the brand's long history of bold silhouettes and powerful femininity.
Strength Over Beauty
Instead of casting a runway favourite, Mugler chose professional bodybuilder Tatiana Horslaville to appear in a series of striking black and white photographs captured by photographer Chris Lensz. Her sculpted physique mirrors the sharp curves and architectural shape of the new Aurora handbag, creating a visual connection between the body and the accessory.
According to the fashion house, the campaign references classic portrait photography and nineteenth century sculpture studies. Mugler said the images celebrate sculpted strength as a form of refined elegance while encouraging viewers to rethink traditional ideas of femininity.
Aurora And Lua Begin A New Era
The campaign accompanies the launch of Mugler's first handbag collection under Castro Freitas. The two new designs, Aurora and Lua, continue the clean, sculptural style first introduced in his ready to wear debut collection.
Aurora carries special meaning for the designer because it is named after his mother and also takes inspiration from a rare handbag featured in Manfred Thierry Mugler's Spring Summer 2002 collection, famously photographed by Helmut Newton. Castro Freitas reimagined the archive piece with a moulded shape, raw edge interior and the metallic monolith detail that has quickly become one of his signatures.
Personal Inspiration Shaped the Collection
Castro Freitas described the Aurora as a deeply personal project rather than simply a tribute to Mugler's archives. He explained that naming the bag after his mother reflected the strength and confidence that influenced his understanding of femininity from an early age.
He also said handbags are among the most intimate objects people own because they become an extension of the body and collect memories over time. His aim was to honour Mugler's heritage while introducing leather goods that feel sculptural, sensual and unmistakably modern.
Italian Craftsmanship Meets Responsible Materials
Both handbag families are manufactured in Italy using premium materials and detailed construction techniques. Aurora is available in black, taupe and a python effect finish, while Lua comes in black and faux python in both a shoulder version and the larger Lua City design.
The textured finishes may resemble exotic skins, but Mugler continues its long standing commitment to avoiding real fur and exotic leather. Instead, the house creates the same luxurious appearance using alternative materials that stay true to its policy.
Aurora is priced between £1,410 ($1,900) and £1,485 ($2,000). Lua starts at around £1,635 ($2,200), rises to £1,710 ($2,300) for the standard version, while the larger Lua City costs approximately £2,380 ($3,200).
Celebrities Back the Bags
Although the wider launch is only just beginning, the handbags have already appeared on several well known names. Dua Lipa, Naomi Watts and Natasha Lyonne have all been spotted carrying the designs before their wider release.
The bags are already available through Dover Street Market stores in Paris, New York and Los Angeles, with the wider online launch taking place through Mugler's official website. The early celebrity interest suggests the collection is already attracting attention beyond the runway.
Mugler Opens a Fresh Chapter
This campaign is about far more than introducing another luxury handbag. By replacing supermodels with a female bodybuilder, Mugler sends a clear message that confidence, power and individuality deserve the spotlight just as much as traditional fashion ideals.
At the same time, Aurora and Lua establish the foundation of Mugler's growing leather goods category under Miguel Castro Freitas. With sculptural craftsmanship, personal storytelling and an unapologetically bold campaign, the house has found a memorable way to begin its next chapter while staying true to the fearless spirit that has always defined Mugler.
