Nicolas Cage has sparked a debate after describing himself as 'a little bit homeless' while revealing that he has been living in hotels after a massive sinkhole damaged the driveway outside his Malibu home. The actor's remarks prompted mixed reactions online, with some questioning whether the wealthy Hollywood star should use the word 'homeless', while others argued that he was simply explaining an upsetting change to his living arrangements.
Cage made the comments during an appearance at LA Comic Con on Saturday, October 31, while discussing his Halloween plans. His explanation included a detail that resonated with some fans: he was disappointed that he could no longer welcome trick-or-treaters to his home as he usually would.
The discussion gathered momentum on Reddit, where commenters disagreed over whether Cage's choice of words was appropriate or whether the reaction to his remarks was excessive. Some took issue with a millionaire describing himself as homeless, while others felt the criticism overlooked the personal impact of losing access to a place he called home.
Nicolas Cage's Hotel Living Arrangements Prompt Mixed Reactions
'I'm currently a little bit homeless,' Cage said at the convention, according to footage reported by the Los Angeles Times. 'Something happened to my house in Malibu so I'm just sort of living in hotels so I don't have normal trick or treaters I would like to enjoy tonight.'

The actor went on to explain that he planned to take his four-year-old daughter, August, trick-or-treating in Santa Monica instead. He also said he intended to watch Stanley Kubrick's horror classic The Shining after putting her to bed.
Some Reddit users questioned Cage's use of the word 'homeless', pointing out that staying in hotels is a very different experience from being without shelter. One commenter wrote: 'Homeless don't hit the same when you are rich and definitely not actually homeless.'

Another user was more blunt, writing: 'He's not actually homeless lmao. This is ridiculous. Sorry about his house, but dude had money for temporary stay.'
Another commenter summed up the criticism by arguing: 'Homeless for a millionaire is not the same as homeless for regular people.' The responses reflected a broader concern that using the term could minimise the experiences of people facing genuine housing insecurity.

However, plenty of commenters defended the actor and suggested that his remarks had been taken out of context. One of the thread's most popular responses said: 'He said he's staying in hotels and just commented on how he missed handing out candy to trick or treaters. Seems pretty reasonable, no need to drag him.'
Others agreed that losing access to a home can be upsetting regardless of someone's financial circumstances. One commenter pointed out that having somewhere else to stay does not necessarily make the loss of a familiar home or neighbourhood any less difficult.
Sinkhole Damage Forces Nicolas Cage Away From Malibu Home
Cage's comments came after a massive sinkhole opened near his Malibu property in September, swallowing his driveway and disrupting access to the surrounding neighbourhood. The Los Angeles Times reported that the hole measured approximately 25 feet deep and 30 feet by 60 feet, amid concerns about coastal erosion, powerful waves and worsening weather conditions.

A sinkhole started opening outside his home; Neighbors thought, eh, probably fixable.
Then all hell broke loose.

The incident also affected dozens of neighbouring properties, with 31 homes subject to evacuation orders. Seven were red-tagged because of hazardous conditions, while another 24 were affected by the loss of safe vehicle access, according to the report.
In October, Cage secured four permits covering work that included debris removal, soil sampling and the installation of sandbags to help protect the area from waves and further coastal erosion. The homeowners association responsible for the private roadway is also overseeing repair efforts.
Cage purchased the Malibu home for $10.5 million in 2024, the Los Angeles Times reported. The ongoing efforts to address the damage suggest that the situation is more than a temporary inconvenience, even if his hotel arrangements have drawn a different kind of attention.
For some commenters, the actor's choice of words was the real issue. Others argued that the criticism overlooked the personal disruption of losing access to a familiar home and the Halloween tradition he had hoped to enjoy.
