Ryan Gosling's long-awaited entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe has fans celebrating, but also doing a double take.
Technically, he's keeping Ghost Rider in the family. Because within hours of the casting announcement, fans spotted a detail that branched into a real-life Marvel multiverse of its own: Gosling isn't just stepping into the Ghost Rider universe. He was already connected to it through his wife, Eva Mendes.
Married to an Og Ghost Rider Star
At San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel Studios confirmed that Gosling will take on the role of Johnny Blaze, the flame-headed anti-hero at the centre of the Ghost Rider reboot. The film is set for a 2028 release, with Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy at the helm.
For Gosling, the casting is years in the making. At the San Diego Comic-Con, he shared that Ghost Rider is a character he 'wanted to play for a very long time', making this less of a surprise and more of a manifestation.
What no one had on their Marvel bingo card, however, was how neatly the casting would tie back to his personal life.
Back in 2007, Eva Mendes starred opposite Nicolas Cage in Ghost Rider, playing Roxanne Simpson, Johnny Blaze's love interest. Along with its 2011 sequel, the film predates the current MCU timeline, but it remains a defining part of the character's cinematic history.
Which means, depending on how you look at it, the legendary actor hasn't just joined Marvel. He married into it.

Others joked that Gosling had been 'playing the long game' all along, while a few admitted they didn't even know the couple was connected to the franchise in the first place.

Zeroing in on the way the role appeared to be manifested, another Redditor was in pleasant disbelief, 'Wow! It actually happened! Ryan Gosling IS the new Ghost Rider... in his own solo movie. :O.'
One viral comment cheekily reframed the announcement entirely: 'instead of Ryan Gosling joins the MCU, it should read, "Star of 2007's Ghost Rider Eva Mendes" husband has been cast as the new Ghost Rider.'
On the flipside, other Marvel fans had no clue the two were even married. 'I didn't know they were married. That's really funny', another Instagram user commented.
Taking the humour to heart, one dedicated fan defended Gosling's already-known credibility as an actor, saying: 'Ryan Gosling has his own name. Use it.!'
'Just Because the Lights Go Out Does Not Mean It's a Sign'
Sharing the news in the most Marvel-way possible, Kevin Feige dramatically cut the lights after saying, 'Just because the lights go out does not mean it's a sign'. His statement was a reference to an interview with MTV back in 2022, when Ryan Gosling reportedly shared that he would want to portray the role of Ghost Rider. In 2022, the lights suddenly went out during that exact moment of his MTV interview, and the film producer proceeded to joke about how it is a 'bad omen'. Fast forward four years, and that 'bad omen' turned into of the most iconic casting announcements Comic-Con has ever seen.
A Full-Circle Marvel Moment
While Mendes' version of the franchise exists outside the current MCU timeline, the connection is strong. It represents storytelling ingredients that fans love—one dash of coincidence, one pinch of cosmic alignment, and just enough irony to make it Marvel at its finest.
Gosling stepping into the shoes of the famous hot-head (literally) also marks a new era for the character, following Nicolas Cage's original portrayal in the 2007 and 2011 films. This time around, the anti-hero gets a modern reboot, backed by Marvel Studios and a fanbase that's already invested—not just in the casting, but in the story behind it.
