Nike Pony Hair Air Rift
Nike revives pony hair Air Rift Nike

Nike last covered an Air Rift in pony hair in 2002, with a release called the Air Rift Cover. That textured finish has now returned for the first time since, on a split-toe sneaker that still divides almost everyone who sees it.

The Nike Air Rift pony hair pack is part of the brand's Fall 2026 collection and reworks a shoe that first appeared in 1996. It arrives as early 2000s fashion returns and texture-heavy, eccentric streetwear finds a new audience. Collectors who have waited years for the fuzzy finish will want a pair, because the Air Rift Cover was the last release to use the material. Everyone else is looking at a furry trainer with a gap down the front.

A Cult Classic That Keeps Coming Back

The Air Rift has never been a mainstream shoe, but it has always had devoted fans. By 2022, it was a cult favourite, particularly among British sneakerheads, who treated the open, strappy design as a summer staple. Even then, the split toe divided opinion.

Its profile has risen again since. Nike and SKIMS extended their partnership into footwear with the NikeSKIMS Rift Mesh, which was launched earlier this year. It was the first dedicated sneaker from the collaboration, which had focused on bodywear and apparel, and it kept the split toe and straps in a slimmer, more minimal shape with neutral colours.

Design, Materials & Sizing Guide

The original Air Rift was a split-toe running shoe inspired by barefoot Kenyan runners and the Great Rift Valley. The split separates the big toe from the other four, and adjustable hook-and-loop straps secure the shoe. The 2026 pack replaces the usual mesh with pony hair and adds leather and textile inserts.

There are four colourways. Nike first introduced the series as a three-piece pack of solid colours, then expanded it with a cheetah print edition. The solid pairs are Old Royal and Black with bright blue pony hair, Black and Cool Grey in a monochrome finish, and Dark Driftwood and Black in a muted brown. The fourth pair, Black and Desert Ochre, has cheetah spotting over a soft, fuzzy finish.

The pack is released in women's sizes only, from US women's 5 to 16, which matches men's 3.5 to 14.5. Men should take their usual men's size and add 1.5 to find the women's size to order.

The Margiela Tabi Effect

The pairs cost £119.99 in the UK and $135 in the US, available through Nike and selected retailers. That is a considered purchase for a shoe many people will see as a statement piece rather than an everyday trainer.

Maison Margiela's Tabi boots helped make split-toe footwear a mainstream fashion talking point, and the Air Rift joins the conversation with a rougher, more nostalgic texture. Pony hair also needs more care than mesh. As with any pony hair footwear, keep them out of heavy rain and use a soft-bristled brush to maintain the texture.

How to Style the Nike Air Rift Pony Hair Pack

Wide-leg or relaxed denim keeps the split toe visible, and split-toe socks make the shape look deliberate. A plain black or grey top and neutral trousers keep the shoes as the outfit's focus. Black and Cool Grey are the easiest to dress, while Old Royal stands out against almost anything.

Love it or hate it, the pony hair Air Rift doesn't do compromise. It is loud, eccentric, and deeply rooted in Nike's design history, a true statement piece for anyone ready to let their footwear take total control of the look.
