Autopsy Leaves Questions
The independent autopsy, carried out by forensic pathologist Dr. Roger A. Mitchell Jr. concluded that Nolan's manner of death remains 'undetermined' while further investigation continues. The report explained that several important limitations prevented doctors from reaching a definitive conclusion.
Among the biggest obstacles was the inability to examine key parts of Nolan's airway, lungs and stomach because the official state autopsy had already been completed. Toxicology results were also unavailable when the independent examination took place, meaning experts could not fully assess whether drowning or another factor caused his death.
Missing Evidence Complicates the Investigation
The report also noted that part of Nolan's neck had been retained during the original state autopsy, which is standard forensic practice. Because of this, the independent pathologist said he could not completely rule out a neck injury as a contributing factor.
Although no fractures, major wounds or deep tissue injuries were found, decomposition had already affected the body. Doctors also observed red discolouration at the back of Nolan's head, but experts could not determine whether it was caused by natural decomposition or blunt force trauma.

Nolan travelled to Horn Island with friends during the Fourth of July celebrations before they returned to the mainland without him. One friend reportedly claimed Nolan stayed behind to speak with a girl, while others have questioned that version of events.
The independent pathologist said the most important unanswered question is not simply whether Nolan drowned, but how he entered the water in the first place. The report states it cannot determine whether he entered the water conscious or unconscious, willingly or by force.

Horn Island is an uninhabited barrier island off Mississippi's coast that attracts large holiday crowds despite having no permanent facilities or mobile communication. Strong currents have claimed lives there before, according to local officials.
Even so, investigators say understanding how Nolan entered the water is especially important because he was known to be able to swim. That fact has become one of the central reasons why his family continues to push for further investigation.

Nolan's death has attracted national attention, with civil rights lawyer Ben Crump representing the family and calling for transparency throughout the investigation. The case has also sparked widespread discussion online because of conflicting witness accounts and Mississippi's history of racial injustice.
Civil rights leaders including Rev. Al Sharpton have voiced support for the family, while Tyler Perry and Terrell Owens joined Sharpton in offering a combined reward of about £93,300 ($125,000) for information leading to an arrest and conviction if investigators determine a crime took place.
