Paul Wesley is looking back on his early days on The Vampire Diaries, and owning up to the tension fans didn't see on screen.
Opposite him was Nina Dobrev's Elena Gilbert, the human centre of Mystic Falls' chaos and one half of a love story that defined an era. On screen, their chemistry was all sparks and romance. Off screen? Not exactly fireworks.
Now, more than a decade later, Wesley looks back and has some interesting choice words for that version of himself.
Appearing on the Call Her Daddy podcast, the actor didn't sugarcoat his early behaviour on set, admitting that the tension between him and Dobrev had less to do with personality clashes and more to do with him as a person.
'I will take a lot of responsibility', he said. 'I was a bit of a curmudgeon, grumpy, pain in the a**.'
Not exactly Stefan Salvatore-coded, but certainly a plot twist in the form of accountability with a side of humour.
When On-Screen Magic Meets Off-Screen Tension
At the height of The Vampire Diaries, fans were deeply invested in every lingering glance and emotionally charged scene between Stefan and Elena. What they didn't see was the friction brewing behind the camera.
According to Wesley, his intense approach to acting played a major role. While the rest of the cast maintained a more relaxed atmosphere on set, he was locked in; serious, focused, and, by his own admission, not always the easiest to work with.
'I was taking my acting seriously. I was a little bit intense', he explained.
Despite the off-screen clashes, Wesley and Dobrev managed to deliver one of the show's most compelling dynamics. The kind of chemistry you can't manufacture, even if you tried.
'We would butt heads on set', he shared. 'But the minute the cameras rolled, we knew we wanted to make it magical.'
From Friction to Friendship
Like any good long-running series arc, the story didn't end in conflict.
Over time, specifically around the show's later seasons, Wesley admitted he began to mellow out. The tension eased and what started as a rocky working relationship eventually turned into genuine friendship.
In fact, when Dobrev left the series in 2015, Wesley recounts playfully telling her that she would miss him one day. When she returned for the series finale after leaving in Season 6, Wesley realised just how much had changed. Contrary to what he initially told her, it was him who admitted missing having Dobrev around.
'We looked at each other, and I was like, "I missed you,"' he recalled.
Plot twist: the curmudgeon grew into a friend.
Today, the two share a much lighter, more playful dynamic, with Wesley noting that he now 'absolutely adores' his former co-star.
As if the redemption arc needed one more layer, Paul Wesley and Nina Dobrev are set to reunite on screen in the upcoming film You Deserve to Know. This time, however, without the pressure of carrying a romance that once divided an entire fandom into Team Stefan and Team Damon.
Friendship looks good on them.
After all, if The Vampire Diaries taught us anything, it's that people (and vampires) evolve...even the grumpy ones.
