PewDiePie has officially ended his family vlogs after more than four years of documenting life with his wife, Marzia, and their young son, Björn. The Swedish YouTuber confirmed the end of the series in his latest vlog, explaining that his son was getting older and this played a key role in the decision.
The announcement comes shortly after older footage of Björn wearing dresses resurfaced online, prompting criticism from some social-media users. However, PewDiePie did not say the backlash was behind the decision to end the vlogs. Instead, he has repeatedly pointed to his son's age and his wish to give him more control over his own online presence.
PewDiePie Ends Family Vlogs
PewDiePie first announced the plan to end the vlogs in a video uploaded on 23 May. At the time, he explained that they had decided to stop in September after documenting their life in Japan for almost four years.
'Now he's three years old and we feel like it's a good time to end the vlogs,' he said in the May announcement, referring to his son. He added that Björn had become a significant part of his content and that, if his son wanted to be involved in the future, 'that should be his choice later'.
In his latest vlog, PewDiePie returned to the subject, opening with: 'It's the end of the vlogs.' He admitted that it felt strange after years of filming their everyday life. The creator also looked back on how the series began. What was originally expected to be only 'one or two' videos eventually became around 100, largely because of the support from viewers.
PewDiePie said documenting Marzia's pregnancy and Björn's early years had been 'really special', but he now feels the regular format puts too much focus on his son. 'I want him to make his own choices. He deserves his own privacy,' the YouTuber said.
The family may still share occasional photos and videos of Björn, but the regular vlog format is over.
Old Footage Draws Fresh Backlash
The announcement follows renewed attention on an older clip showing Björn wearing a dress.
The footage recently resurfaced online, with some social media users criticising PewDiePie and Marzia over their parenting. Others defended the couple and viewed the incident as a normal example of a young child experimenting with clothes.
PewDiePie previously addressed the subject by recalling that he also wore a dress as a young child. His response suggested that he did not view the clothing itself as something unusual or concerning.
