The singer recently announced that her new single, 'Patient Zero', will arrive on 25 September. She also opened a 24-hour pre-order window on her website, ending a countdown that had fans watching the clock and questioning her sudden fascination with the number zero.
Now that they have the title, the internet has gone back through months of music videos, social media edits, and television appearances to find out just how long Swift has been dropping clues in plain sight. Sorry if they missed the hints, Taylor. Some fans might just have been a bit distracted by a certain Madison Square Garden wedding.
The 'Opalite' Video Was Doing the Most
Seven months before the announcement, Swift released the music video for 'Opalite', featuring Domhnall Gleeson, Cillian Murphy, Greta Lee, and Jodie Turner-Smith. While viewers were busy admiring the celebrity cameos, a poster in the background offered a rather pointed instruction: 'Patient for the encore'. Patient. Encore. Suddenly, that piece of set dressing looks like a huge clue that managed to evade the evidence board.
Fans also revisited a scene featuring judges' scorecards, which displayed zeroes. At the time, they were part of the visual joke. Following the 'Patient Zero' reveal, Swifties have added them to said evidence board.

Shortly before the announcement, Swift changed her Instagram and X bios to read: 'And, baby, that's sh0w business f0r y0u.'
The letter 'o' had been replaced with zeroes, sending fans into a familiar round of detective work. On Reddit, one commenter asked, 'Can someone parasocial please help me understand this easter egg'.
Others wondered whether the zero represented Swift's self-titled debut album, fuelling speculation about its long-awaited re-recording. Another theory suggested a special edition of The Life of a Showgirl.
One fan offered a more accurate assessment of the situation: 'not even us know what she's hiding'. If Swifties don't know what Taylor Swift is hiding, then no one will.
Did the Emmys Cameo Give Away the Encore?
Swift's pre-taped appearance with Mariska Hargitay at the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards may have carried another clue, although this one remains a fan-theory for now.
During their Law & Order: Special Victims Unit parody, Swift said they were looking for something 'hiding in plain sight' before delivering a peculiar sequence of words: 'Saccharide, Ares, From the Vineyard, North or South'. Fans subsequently proposed that the sequence concealed 'ENCORE', connecting it to the 'Opalite' poster.
There is also speculation surrounding an additional, unrevealed page in the 'My Letter' section of Swift's website. Whether that points to anything beyond the single is anyone's guess.
For now, 'Patient Zero' arrives on Friday, 25 September, and Swifties finally have an answer to at least one of their questions.
