New York Knicks guard Tyler Kolek has sparked a debate among basketball fans after questioning Taylor Swift's loyalty to the team, calling the pop star's support 'a little performative.' The 25-year-old made the comments during an NBA 2K livestream on Thursday, 5 November, while answering a question about the team's least genuine celebrity supporters.

Kolek was joined by teammate Miles 'Deuce' McBride when they were asked to name the fakest celebrity fan they had seen sitting courtside at an NBA game. Although Kolek first spoke about celebrities who attend games just to be seen, he soon singled out Swift.

The comments quickly caught attention, especially after McBride agreed with his teammate and warned him that Swift's fans would not be happy with his answer. However, the Knicks organization later stepped in to defend the singer, making it clear that the players' opinions did not represent the team's official position.

Kolek Questions Her Loyalty

The exchange took place while the two players were taking part in an NBA 2K League livestream on Thursday. When asked who he thought was the fakest celebrity fan, Kolek suggested that some famous people only show up at games because they want attention rather than because they care about the team.

'At the Knicks games, I would say it's very performative,' Kolek said. 'Because like, they just want to be seen at the game. They're not necessarily fans.'

He then named Swift, adding that he was not sure he had seen her at many other games. The basketball player also admitted that the singer had a busy schedule, but still questioned whether her appearances showed real support for the Knicks.

McBride Joins The Debate

McBride did not stay quiet after his teammate named the pop star, quickly agreeing with Kolek's choice. He also joked that the comment would not go down well with Swift's huge fan base, known as the Swifties.

'The Swifties, I'm gonna get some hate from the Swifties,' Kolek replied, showing that he already expected a strong reaction from the singer's supporters. McBride then brought up two other famous Knicks fans who he believed were more regular supporters of the team.

The player named actor Ben Stiller and comedian Tracy Morgan, describing other celebrity supporters as 'solid.' His comments added another layer to the exchange, as the players appeared to question whether some famous faces were more interested in being seen at Madison Square Garden than following the team's games.

Knicks Defend Taylor Swift

The Knicks organization soon made its position clear after the players' comments gained attention. A team spokesperson released a statement on Friday, 6 November, defending Swift and making it clear that Kolek and McBride's views were not the official stance of the club.

'Taylor Swift has been a Knicks fan for many years, has a long history with Madison Square Garden, and we are incredibly appreciative of her support of the organization,' the spokesperson said. The statement pushed back against the idea that the singer only attends games for attention and praised her long connection to the team.

Swift has also been spotted at Knicks games long before their recent championship run, with photos showing her at Madison Square Garden in October and November 2014. She also performed at the famous New York arena during her Fearless and Speak Now tours, giving her a connection to the venue that goes beyond her courtside appearances.

Swift's Knicks History

One of Swift's most talked-about appearances came during Game 4 of the 2026 NBA Finals between the Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs on 10 June. She sat courtside with friends Alana Haim, Este Haim, and actress Mariska Hargitay, wearing a blue shirt with the words 'Stevie Knicks' printed across the front.

The singer was also seen during Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Finals in Cleveland in May, where she watched alongside her husband, Travis Kelce. However, Kelce is a known supporter of Cleveland sports teams, and the couple's appearance at that game added to the questions surrounding which team Swift was supporting.
