Dawn, the Brooklyn drag performer who finished sixth on season 16 of RuPaul's Drag Race, watched a clip of Taylor Swift on the Academy Museum Gala carpet and posted what she took to be a compliment. 'Did she get a new stylist because she chronically looks at mess at these functions and this is very fab,' she wrote across the video on her Instagram story.
Within a day she was apologising for it. 'Yall im sorry for saying taylor swift looked really good last night at that event thing'
The 'event thing' was the sixth annual Academy Museum Gala, held in Los Angeles on Saturday 17 October, where Swift closed the night with a performance. It was her first time on the carpet there, in a custom Dior by Jonathan Anderson: an icy blue strapless ballgown with a ruched bodice, a beaded bow at the neckline, exaggerated hips and a finely pleated skirt that ran into a train. Chopard supplied the diamonds, including platinum earrings set with 32.40 carats.

The Inside Joke That Did Not Land
Dawn's defence was that the jab was the affectionate part. 'Deadass I was just trying to be funny shady but like..' she wrote in a follow-up slide, using New York slang for being straight with someone. 'I feel like as someone whose been a fan for damn near 20 years it's kind of an inside joke that her red carpets are usually misses but I've learned my lesson and I'll never say a word about her ever again xoxox <3'
That inside joke is real, and it is one Swift's own listeners have been making for years, which is why Dawn assumed the reference was safe. It was not, and the apology was screenshotted onto a celebrity gossip forum within hours.
People Lined Up Behind Her
'ridiculous that she even has to apologize lmao taylors fans are insane,' read the most upvoted comment in the thread. Another put it more precisely. 'Making someone apologize for saying Taylor looked good is such peak stan behavior lmao.'

Several pointed out the contradiction at the centre of it. 'How can they even get mad at that when her own fans repeatedly acknowledge her looks are chronically a hit or miss,' one wrote, landing on the same word Dawn had used. A reply went further. 'This isn't a controversial take. Water is wet and this is her first no notes red carpet look in an age.'
One widely upvoted commenter made the case for Dawn directly. 'Dawn is a fan too. You can like someone and admit their shortcomings; either serious or funny,' it read. 'Stans ruin things for the normal fans. The "how to be a fan police" are some of the most parasocial people on the planet. You can like Taylor Swift (or whoever) and be normal about it.'
The Gown Itself Was a Hit
The strangest part of the episode is how many commenters agreed with Dawn's actual verdict. The gown was described as Cinderella-inspired and the coverage was favourable. Even the commenters least inclined to flatter Swift said as much. 'It's actually always a miss for me and yesterday she looked gorgeous,' one wrote.
What was left to argue about was the response. 'God being a swiftie sounds exhausting,' read one of the most upvoted replies of the day. 'Stans have genuinely ruined liking things,' wrote another.
Swift has said nothing about any of it. One commenter summed up the weekend in a single line: 'Swifties always remind me that the word fan comes from fanatic.'
