According to court documents, the investigation began after authorities were called in December 2024. Armenti initially claimed she had found the cat dead on the bathroom floor, but investigators later discovered the animal's body inside a plastic laundry basket outside the home.
A forensic necropsy found that the cat died from 'involuntary heat exposure.' Experts said the injuries could have resulted from microwave radiation, submersion in hot water or exposure to hot water vapour. The report also concluded that the animal experienced severe pain before dying, though investigators have not publicly identified which specific method they believe caused the fatal injuries.
Bellera has pleaded not guilty. Court records show he was already in custody on unrelated criminal charges when the animal cruelty charge was filed, while Armenti was arrested separately in June.
