Christina Ricci's newest Threads reply has turned a stranger's post about 'divorcing a narcissist' into a pointed question about her own marriage to Mark Hampton. The Yellowjackets actor wrote, 'It is so hard. Dealing with exactly this right now. Sending strength', beneath a post describing divorce, alleged manipulation and repeated co-parenting conflict. Her use of 'exactly this' and 'right now' is what has made the comment feel less like general sympathy and more like a possible disclosure.
The timing creates an obvious puzzle. Ricci's divorce from her first husband, James Heerdegen, was finalised years ago, while Hampton is the person she is currently publicly known to be married to. If she meant 'divorcing' literally and in the present tense, the comment appears to point towards her current marriage.
Why 'Right Now' Changes the Meaning
Ricci filed for divorce from Heerdegen in July 2020, and the former couple's settlement was finalised in December 2022. By then, the Addams Family star had already married celebrity hairstylist Hampton in October 2021 and welcomed their daughter, Cleopatra, that December. That timeline is why her new wording has raised a sharper question than a typical comment about a difficult ex.
The original Threads post opened with, 'How do you survive divorcing a narcissist?' It then described reaching a point where peaceful co-parenting seemed possible, only for the former partner to allegedly 'pull a wild card to cause drama' and 'weaponize anything and anyone'. The most explosive interpretation of Ricci's response is that 'exactly this' referred to the whole account, including its description of the person involved.
The Mark Hampton Question
Hampton, Ricci's second husband and the father of her younger child, is the natural focus if her words were about a current divorce rather than the aftermath of her first one.
Ricci has previously presented their relationship warmly online, calling Hampton 'the love of my life' in a 2024 birthday tribute. She added that their years together had brought 'absolute fun and joy and safety'.
That public image makes the Threads response more surprising, although social media posts cannot establish what may be happening privately at a later date.
Ricci also referred to Hampton as the person who 'holds it all together' in a Father's Day post visible on her Instagram profile. There has been no explanation from either Ricci or Hampton connecting the cryptic reply to their marriage.
Why James Heerdegen Still Fits the Context
There is another reading that does not require Ricci to be announcing a second divorce. Although her marriage to Heerdegen legally ended in 2022, their co-parenting relationship remains active because they share their son, Freddie. The original Threads post focused as heavily on post-separation parenting conflict as it did on the divorce itself.
That context became especially relevant in June 2026, when Heerdegen sought an emergency custody hearing involving their son. Court documents stated that the request was denied after Freddie told lawyers he had 'overreacted' in messages about an incident during a flight and said he felt safe in Ricci's custody. The dispute shows how a finalised divorce can still produce present-day conflict, meaning 'dealing with exactly this right now' could plausibly refer to her ex-husband rather than Hampton.
Ricci did not name Hampton, say that he was a narcissist or explicitly announce that she was divorcing him. Her reply nevertheless invites that interpretation because it was written in the present tense beneath a post specifically framed around divorce. Unless she clarifies which part of the story matched her life, the comment will remain caught between two possibilities: a rare hint of trouble in her current marriage or a reference to continuing conflict from the one that ended years ago.
