A couple celebrating their first anniversary in Japan received an unexpected hotel upgrade after pretending they were on their honeymoon. What started as a playful attempt to secure a small romantic gesture turned into a luxurious stay that left one of them feeling guilty.

Donya Rahimi and her boyfriend, Nick, had booked a night at a traditional Japanese inn during their trip to Asia. However, after reserving the cheapest room available, Rahimi decided to tell the hotel they were newlyweds, never expecting the staff to take the supposed celebration so seriously.

A Little Lie at Booking

Rahimi, an actor, told People that she and Nick travel to a new destination each year using money earned from working at a summer programme in England. Japan had been on their travel wish list, and they particularly wanted to experience a traditional Japanese inn, known as a ryokan.

The couple initially opted for the cheapest accommodation they could find due to their limited budget. While completing the reservation on her laptop, Rahimi mentioned that they were on their honeymoon, even though they were actually marking their anniversary.

She had heard stories about travellers receiving complimentary treats or thoughtful gestures after mentioning special occasions to hotels. Although she had considered trying the trick before, she said: 'I'd always been too afraid because I thought it was bad karma'.

Hotel Surprises Couple With Upgrade

The surprise came when the couple arrived at the hotel late in the evening after a tiring day of travelling. They were also soaking wet from the rain and had almost forgotten about the honeymoon detail Rahimi had included in their reservation.

During check-in, a hotel employee handed them a handwritten note with drawings, congratulating them on their supposed marriage. Another member of staff then informed them that their room had been upgraded.

Instead of the modest room with traditional floor mats they had originally booked, the couple received a spacious suite with three separate rooms and proper beds. Rahimi was thrilled by the unexpected luxury, particularly because they would not normally have been able to afford such accommodation.

When the Guilt Sets In

In a TikTok video documenting the experience, Rahimi shared her mixed feelings about the generous gesture. She admitted: 'I was so excited when I first saw the room, but once that wore off, I started feeling pretty guilty. Part of me was like, "Just enjoy it, you're being dramatic", and the other part was like, "You're going to hell for this".'

The situation also became a topic of discussion between Rahimi and Nick, who found the experience amusing. Unlike his girlfriend, Nick did not feel particularly guilty, partly because he had not been involved in making the reservation.

Rahimi sought advice from her family and best friend, using FaceTime to ask whether she should tell the hotel the truth. Although they encouraged her to enjoy the accommodation, she and Nick still considered whether to confess to the staff.

The Internet Find It Hilarious

Rahimi's story prompted a series of humorous reactions from TikTok users, with many encouraging her to enjoy the unexpected upgrade rather than feel guilty. One person joked: 'I'm calling the cops'. Another advised her to keep quiet, delete the video and enjoy the room, adding: 'If they upgraded then that means it was available and going unused!'

Others shared similar experiences, with one commenter revealing: 'Me and my boyfriend take anniversary trips (just dating) and everyone assumes we're married and we get upgrades/free stuff'. Another encouraged Rahimi not to feel bad, arguing that everyone deserved a little luxury and pampering.

Ultimately, Rahimi and Nick decided to keep the honeymoon story to themselves, partly because it was already late and they were exhausted. 'I obviously had an amazing experience, so I don't want to be a hypocrite, but I also can't be out here encouraging people to do it, haha!' Rahimi explained.
