Cruz Beckham has always had one obvious challenge as he builds a music career, and that's being a Beckham. The 21-year-old is trying to establish himself as a singer and guitarist, but according to a new book, his early plans involved putting some distance between himself and the famous family name.
Journalist Alison Boshoff claims in her book — Brand Beckham: The Fame. The Feuds. The Fallout — that Cruz's former management team wanted him to launch his career without the Beckham surname taking centre stage. However, the plan reportedly did not last long, with his mum Victoria Beckham allegedly stepping in after sharing a video of her son performing.
Did Victoria Block Cruz's Name Change Plan?
Cruz and his indie band, The Breakers, initially signed with TaP management. The company is behind the careers of major artists including Dua Lipa, Ellie Goulding and Lana Del Rey.
According to Boshoff's book, the idea was to help Cruz move away from the 'Posh Spice's baby boy' label and let audiences discover him as a musician first. However, Victoria reportedly had other ideas. 'She scuppered it,' a source quoted in the book claimed.
The alleged turning point came when Victoria shared footage of Cruz performing at a pub owned by family friend Guy Ritchie. Instead keeping his music career separate from his famous family, the video put the Beckham connection right back in the spotlight.
Cruz subsequently parted ways with TaP in 2024. The split was described at the time as being on friendly terms, with the company saying: 'We are focused on making music artists as successful as they can be... It wasn't possible in the circumstances.'
How Cruz Built His Music Career
Cruz's interest in music is hardly a recent development. He released his first single, 'If Every Day Was Christmas', when he was just 11, with proceeds going to charity.
As he got older, however, his musical direction changed considerably. His sound shifted towards guitar-led indie and rock, with influences including bands such as Oasis and The Stone Roses.
After leaving TaP, he signed with C3 Management, which has represented rock acts including Thirty Seconds to Mars and Modest Mouse.
That evolution eventually led to The Breakers. Cruz released 'Optics' and 'Lick The Toad' with the band in October 2025, before following them with 'For Your Love' in February 2026. The group has since taken its music on the road, from intimate UK and European gigs to a spot at Lollapalooza in the US this August.
The Wider Beckham Family Drama
These claims arrive during a particularly complicated period for the Beckham family.
Cruz's older brother Brooklyn publicly spoke about his strained relationship with their parents earlier this year, bringing long-running speculation about tensions within the family into the open. The dispute has placed renewed attention on the idea of 'Brand Beckham' and how the family's public image has been managed over the years.
Boshoff's book gives a different look at how the Beckham brand may have shaped the family's younger generation. But for Cruz, it goes beyond simply having a famous surname.
Today, Cruz is performing under his real name and continuing to build The Breakers as an indie-rock band. He may not have managed to launch his career completely outside the Beckham shadow, but he is clearly trying to carve out something that feels like his own.
And for now, the surname that he reportedly wanted to leave behind remains right there on the poster.
