Gap has turned one of its best-known fashion ideas into a handbag, and the result is already getting plenty of attention. The brand's new Five-Pocket Tote, called 'Jirkin' by fashion fans, takes details from a pair of Gap jeans and puts them on a large denim bag, including belt loops, metal hardware and five-pocket-style stitching.
The bag has picked up the nickname 'Jirkin' online because some fashion fans see its shape as a playful mix of jeans and a Birkin-style tote. However, Jirkin is not Gap's official name for the product. The company calls it the Five-Pocket Tote, priced at around £59 ($79.95) to £110 ($148) for the standard versions and £369 ($498) for the limited-edition patchwork denim version.
Gap Turns Its Five-Pocket Jeans into a Handbag
Gap says the Five-Pocket Tote was built around details found on its denim, rather than simply covering a normal tote in blue fabric. The design uses belt loops, jean-style metal hardware and stitching based on the classic five-pocket jean layout. It comes as part of the new Fall 2026 GapBag Collection designed under Reed Krakoff, Gap Inc.'s Executive Director of Accessories.

The regular Five-Pocket Tote line comes in three tote sizes, from small to large, plus satchel and crossbody shapes. Gap is offering versions in different denim washes, canvas and faux suede, with regular Five-Pocket Tote prices running from about £59 ($79.95) to £110 ($148). The £369 ($498) patchwork bag is listed separately by Gap as a limited-edition style.
The standard Large Denim Five-Pocket Tote shows how much storage Gap has packed into the idea. Its product page lists one front button-snap pocket, two outer side pockets and two inside pockets, while the bag can hold a laptop measuring up to 15 inches. The regular large model measures 17.75 inches high, 15 inches long and 8 inches deep, although those measurements should not automatically be applied to the limited patchwork edition.
The $498 Version Is Far More Expensive
The price is one of the biggest reasons the patchwork Five-Pocket Tote stands out. Gap says its main GapBag range costs between about £22 ($29.95) and £110 ($148), while the special patchwork denim Five-Pocket Tote is priced at about £369 ($498). That makes the limited bag roughly £259 ($350) more expensive than the highest-priced standard Five-Pocket Tote listed in Gap's launch announcement.
The nearly £370 ($500) price should therefore not be used as the normal price for Gap's new bags. The collection also includes the Hoodie Tote, Favorite Tote, Crescent Bag and Shoulder Bag, with each line sitting well below the patchwork bag's price. Even the standard Five-Pocket Tote range stops at about £110 ($148).
Gap launched the full Fall 2026 GapBag Collection online on 8 September. Selected styles are also being sold through North American Gap stores and international markets, including the UK. Gap has not said in its launch announcement that every style, including the £369 ($498) patchwork version, will be stocked in every country.
Reed Krakoff Is Behind Gap's New Bag Push
The collection is the first GapBag launch under Krakoff, who joined Gap Inc. as Executive Director of Accessories. Gap says he looked through the company's past designs and used familiar items such as denim jeans and the Arch Logo hoodie as starting points. The result is a five-style handbag range that moves some of Gap's best-known clothing details into accessories.
Krakoff described the Five-Pocket Tote as a design based on Gap's washed denim, jean stitching and metal pieces. Gap has also added charms, keychains, scarves and belts that can be used with the collection. Other bags take a similar approach, including the Hoodie Tote, which uses sweatshirt fleece, ribbing and a drawstring closure inspired by Gap's logo hoodies.
The move gives Gap's unusual denim bag a high-profile setting as the company tests whether shoppers want some of its most recognisable jeans details turned into something they carry rather than wear.
