Aaron Rodgers has reopened the door on his failed engagement to Shailene Woodley, and his version of what happened is raising plenty of eyebrows. The NFL star claims the actress told him she wanted to sleep with another man before getting married, days after accepting his proposal.

Rodgers made the startling claim while looking back on their relationship on Cam Heyward's Not Just Football podcast. The former couple got engaged in 2021 before calling it quits in 2022, but Rodgers is now offering a very different account of how their relationship fell apart.

Aaron Rodgers Revisits Their Split

Rodgers said he proposed to Woodley in December 2020 and she said yes, but suggested she may have felt pressured to make a decision. According to his account, things changed only days later when she told him she wanted to be with another man before getting married.

'Before we get married, I gotta go f*ck this guy,' Rodgers recalled her telling him.

He claimed Woodley then took off her engagement ring by March 2021, just three months after the proposal. Rodgers also said the pair made several attempts to reconcile that year, but ultimately did not get back together.

The quarterback pushed back against the idea that he was the one who simply walked away from Woodley. 'There wasn't even a relationship in '22 to break off. She literally told me, "I don't want to be with you",' he stated.

Rodgers also took aim at what he described as the public narrative surrounding their split, saying: 'There's just a lot of narratives out there that are just not true.'

Woodley has previously spoken about the emotional impact of the relationship. In a 2024 interview with Outside, she described the relationship as 'not right' but also 'beautiful', while discussing the difficult period surrounding their split.

Inside Their Whirlwind Romance

Rodgers and Woodley reportedly began dating in 2020, and their romance moved quickly. In February 2021, Rodgers revealed during his NFL MVP acceptance speech that he was engaged, referring to Woodley as his fiancée without initially naming her.

Woodley later confirmed the engagement, and the pair continued their relationship throughout 2021.

By February 2022, reports emerged that the couple had ended their engagement. The couple had reportedly ended their engagement, with differences, demanding careers, and other challenges reportedly contributing to the split.

The two were later seen together, sparking reconciliation rumours, but the reunion did not last. They ultimately went their separate ways.

Shailene Woodley Fans Question the Timing

Rodgers' latest comments have sparked a wave of reactions online, with some Woodley fans questioning why he decided to discuss such a personal detail now.

The timing is especially noticeable because Woodley recently had a major career moment. She won her first Emmy at the 2026 Creative Arts Emmys for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series for her role as Annie in Hulu's Paradise. Her win came years after she received an Emmy nomination for Big Little Lies.

One commenter wrote: 'How convenient he drops this days after Shailene won an Emmy.' Another joked: 'He was triggered by her winning and how good she looked!'

Others also questioned why Rodgers, who has since moved on, would talk about an intimate detail from an engagement that ended years ago. One user wrote: 'He's been married for over a year yet he chooses now to bring this up?'
