The Scream 6 actress was found unresponsive at an Airbnb in Greenville, S.C. Hayden Panettiere/Instagram

Hayden Panettiere's death has been ruled accidental, and South Carolina police have closed their investigation. However, the decision has prompted questions online, with some fans wondering whether all the circumstances surrounding her death have been explained.

The Nashville star died aged 36 on 16 August, just days before her 37th birthday. On 28 October, Greenville police announced that their investigation had ended after the medical examiner determined that her death was accidental.

Why Police Closed the Case

Panettiere was found unresponsive at an apartment at Judson Mill Lofts in Greenville, South Carolina, on 16 August. Emergency responders attempted to revive her, but she was pronounced dead at the scene, according to local reports.

The Greenville County Coroner's Office determined that her death was caused by the toxic effects of five substances: fentanyl, 4-ANPP, alprazolam, methocarbamol and quetiapine. The coroner classified the death as accidental, while the autopsy found no trauma that contributed to it.

Police said they had closed their investigation based on the medical examiner's determination and their own findings. However, the announcement did not clarify whether any separate federal inquiry was continuing, leaving questions about the scope of any other investigation unanswered.

Fans Question Accidental Ruling

Panettiere's death has prompted a mixture of grief, disbelief and scepticism on social media. One fan paid tribute to the actress, writing: 'She was my favorite actress in the industry.' Others questioned the circumstances, with one commenter asking: 'ACCIDENTAL ?'

Another commenter challenged the classification, writing: 'Illegal drugs yet accidental do not jive.' A third user responded sarcastically: 'Accidental, case closed, nothing to see here,' while expressing hope that Ukrainian former heavyweight boxing champion and Panettiere's ex-fiancé, Wladimir Klitschko, was doing something 'behind the scenes'.

Some commenters went further, suggesting possible foul play or a cover-up without presenting evidence to support their claims. One wrote: 'Swear to God on everything, I bet money on it they got to her.' Others pushed back against the speculation, with one user stating: 'The people in the comments claiming this is a "cover up, conspiracy, murder, etc," have absolutely zero evidence to support these claims.'

The Reported DEA Search

Questions about the case have also resurfaced after reports that the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) searched Panettiere's Los Angeles home on 25 August, nine days after her death. Investigators reportedly carried out the search under a warrant as they looked for evidence linked to controlled substances.

The reported search has left some fans wondering whether there was more to the investigation than what Greenville police have publicly discussed. However, the search alone does not mean investigators suspected foul play or that a separate investigation is still under way. The DEA can assist state and local authorities with drug-related death investigations when needed. However, it has not been publicly confirmed whether the agency is still involved in Panettiere's case following the closure of the Greenville police investigation.

Panettiere had spoken openly about her struggles with addiction and recovery. Her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, published in May 2026, explored difficult periods in her personal life, while her roles in Heroes, Nashville and the Scream franchise made her a familiar face to television and film audiences.
