Hilary Duff has just admitted that her skincare habits do not stay confined to her own bathroom. The 38-year-old revealed she convinced her husband, Matthew Koma, to try her salmon sperm facials, and rather than merely tolerating it, he has apparently become just as enthusiastic about the treatment as she is.
The confession came in an interview with PEOPLE, where Duff ran through her beauty routine with typical candour. 'I love Botox', she said. 'I'm obsessed with microneedling and salmon sperm facials. It works so well. I'm making my husband do it. He's obsessed. He loves it.'
What is Actually in a Salmon Sperm Facial?
Despite the eyebrow-raising name, nobody is smearing raw fish parts on their face. Instead, it uses PDRN (polydeoxyribonucleotide), which is a purified DNA fragment extracted from the sperm cells of salmon trout.
The extract undergoes extensive processing to remove proteins and active allergens. What remains is chemically similar enough to human DNA that skin cells can utilise it effectively, stimulating collagen production and repairing damage at the cellular level.
The treatment is usually administered through microneedling or fine injections. In the US, a single professional session costs anywhere from $400 to over $900 (£300 to £700), depending on the provider. Typically, a course of three or four sessions is recommended for optimal results. While the US Food and Drug Administration has not approved PDRN for injectable use in the US, topical versions are legal and widely available.
Duff is not the only celebrity embracing this treatment. The procedure gained mainstream attention after Kim Kardashian popularised it on The Kardashians, making PDRN a standout choice in Hollywood's somewhat alarming yet highly effective beauty toolkit.
Not Your Average Skincare Routine
Duff's admission is particularly impactful due to the stark contrast she presents. In the same conversation, she describes her hectic life as a mother of four, where the school run gives her just a few minutes to prepare. As a result, she typically opts for simple, no-fuss products. This relatable image of a busy working mum with limited time for her appearance is one she has consistently maintained over the years.
Except, beneath her seemingly effortless appearance is a complex, high-end skincare routine. The combination of Botox, microneedling, and a fish DNA treatment is financially out of reach for the average person. This shows that having flawless skin while raising four children is not quick, cheap, or easy. Including her husband in this routine turns an expensive luxury into a shared household activity.
A Masterclass in Multitasking
Fans reacting online have leaned into a mix of amusement and mild horror, torn between disgust at the key ingredient and admiration for Koma's willingness to participate.
But Duff has never been one to slow down. While managing her household and keeping her skin glowing, she is also travelling the globe on her highly anticipated Lucky Me Tour, launched off the back of her 2026 comeback album Luck... or Something. She is proving she can juggle pop stardom and intensive skincare all at once.
Whether salmon sperm facials will successfully cross over into mainstream skincare, as snail mucin did, or remain a Hollywood curiosity is still up in the air. But for now, it has at least won over one famously sceptical husband.
