A Kansas woman was determined to make her voice heard at the ballot box, even as her contractions became increasingly difficult to ignore. The expectant mother made an unusual stop at Shawnee County Election Office in Topeka on 2 November, refusing to leave without casting her vote despite being in active labour.
Her determination quickly caught the attention of social media users, with one X user calling her a 'Patriot' for putting her civic duty first. The incident took place at the Shawnee County Election Office ahead of the 3 November US midterm elections.
Kansas Voter Earns 'Patriot' Praise for Voting in Labour
According to Assistant Election Commissioner Jake Fisher, the woman arrived while experiencing contractions but was adamant about completing her ballot before heading to the hospital. 'She was spectacular. She was very adamant. She goes, "I came here to vote, and I am going to cast my ballot,"' Fisher told News From The States.
Her contractions were reportedly around five minutes apart when she began voting. Despite the circumstances, she remained determined to finish what she had come to do.
The woman's determination struck a chord with social media users, particularly those amused by her decision to squeeze in a trip to the polling station before giving birth. One X user described her as a 'Patriot,' praising her commitment to voting even as she prepared to welcome her baby.

The reaction added another layer to an already unusual election story, with users celebrating her dedication while joking about the baby's unexpected involvement in the democratic process. Another social media user offered a humorous take, joking: 'Get that baby registered and back to the polls by 8pm.'

Contractions Reach Two Minutes Apart as Woman Completes Ballot
According to Fisher, the woman was not particularly worried about being in labour because it was her second pregnancy. However, the delivery appeared to be progressing much faster than she had anticipated.
Her contractions reportedly became increasingly frequent, eventually reaching approximately two minutes apart. She had already contacted a family member, who was on their way to collect her and take her to the hospital. Before leaving, however, she made sure her ballot was completed.
The woman gave Fisher and another election worker permission to take her ballot through the office and place it in the tabulator. Fisher also revealed that the woman had previously volunteered as an election worker at the office and would have helped out during the election if her pregnancy had not prevented her from doing so.
The election team made sure she left with a couple of souvenirs from her memorable visit: an 'I Voted' sticker for herself and a 'Future Voter' sticker for her unborn baby. She proudly placed the latter on her shirt over her stomach, giving her little one an election keepsake before they had even made their arrival into the world.
Election Workers Witness an Unusual Voting Experience
While election workers regularly assist voters in different circumstances, having someone complete their ballot while experiencing labour was a first for the office. 'We've helped people vote, you know, through all kinds of circumstances,' Fisher said. 'But labour had never been a factor before.'
The staff were happy to help the woman complete her civic duty while ensuring she could get on her way to the hospital. There has been no confirmed public update on whether she has since welcomed her baby.
Still, the little one has already had an unusually eventful introduction to American democracy. After all, not every future voter gets their first election sticker before they are even born.
