Kate Moss once turned down a speaking role on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit because, according to longtime star Mariska Hargitay, the British supermodel had something much more specific in mind: she wanted to lie on screen as a dead body.

Hargitay revealed the story during her appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Wednesday, 9 September, explaining that famous people have repeatedly approached her about playing corpses on the NBC crime drama. Moss, whose career includes defining Calvin Klein campaigns and decades at the centre of British fashion, apparently had a more specific request than producers initially realised: she did not want any lines.

Moss Wanted the Corpse Cameo, Not the Dialogue

Hargitay said Moss had been letting her know that she wanted to appear on SVU, so the actor took the request to the show's producers. Instead of handing Moss a background cameo, they created an actual character for her. 'We wrote her a part,' Hargitay said, explaining that Moss would have played a madam.

That was not the role Moss had in mind. Hargitay recalled the model responding: 'No, no, no. I don't want any lines. I just want to be a dead body.' Moss was therefore prepared to skip dialogue altogether for a crime scene appearance that would require little more than playing the victim.

The revelation comes from Hargitay rather than Moss, and there is no indication that the proposed guest role progressed beyond those discussions. Moss ultimately did not appear as the madam producers had written for her.

Playing Dead on 'SVU' Is a Celebrity Request

Moss was apparently not alone in wanting to become an SVU victim. Hargitay said major stars regularly approach her specifically about appearing as dead bodies on the long-running series. She described the requests as something she has heard repeatedly rather than an unusual suggestion from Moss alone.

Hargitay explained that some prospective guests are less interested in a conventional celebrity cameo with a developed character or substantial dialogue. Instead, they want what she described as an 'iconic dead body' appearance. Moss's request took that idea further because producers had already been willing to give her an actual speaking role.

By that point, Moss hardly needed extra exposure. Discovered at fourteen, she became closely associated with Calvin Klein during the 1990s and went on to work with fashion houses including Burberry, Dior, Louis Vuitton and Yves Saint Laurent. Calvin Klein continues to describe Moss as one of its 'icons of the 90s' while using archival photographs of the model in its current collections.

The Kate Moss Cameo Never Happened

Kate Moss has occasionally stepped outside traditional modelling for screen appearances, including comedy and fashion film projects, but Hargitay's story suggests that this particular opportunity was not about building a conventional acting résumé. Hargitay's account suggests Moss was specifically interested in playing one of SVU's dead bodies rather than taking on a conventional acting role. Producers offered a larger role, while Moss wanted the part requiring virtually nothing to be said.

The anecdote surfaced as Hargitay prepares for another major stretch in her own career. She has played Olivia Benson since SVU premiered in 1999, and the series is scheduled to return for Season 28 on 8 October. Hargitay is also set to host the 78th Emmy Awards on Monday, 14 September.

Moss's requested cameo may never have reached the screen, but Hargitay's account explains why the proposed appearance never moved forward. A speaking role was available, producers had written the character and Moss still passed on it. What she wanted from SVU was simpler: no dialogue, no extended guest arc, just the chance to play dead.
