Katherine Ryan has sparked a debate about family size after describing having lots of children as 'trashy' and claiming that no 'normal, smart, sane, middle-class person' has more than two children.
The comedian, a mother of four herself, made the remarks while discussing large families and the financial circumstances surrounding parents who have several children.
Ryan's comments were made on her podcast Telling Everybody Everything, where she acknowledged that her views could offend some listeners before explaining her position on families with a large number of children.
Katherine Ryan's Controversial Family Comments
During the discussion, Ryan questioned whether having a large number of children could be considered 'a real trash thing to do'.
She argued that, in her view, people with lots of children tended to fall into two broad groups: highly successful families who could comfortably afford the expense, and families she claimed were relying heavily on government assistance.
Ryan stressed that she does support government assistance in certain circumstances, describing herself as having 'certain very socialist beliefs'. However, she then criticised what she characterised as people taking advantage of the benefits system.
Her comments about parents receiving support were presented as her own observations and opinions, rather than evidence of a broader pattern applying to large families generally.
Ryan Calls Four Children a 'Luxury'
The comedian also discussed the financial reality of raising several children.
According to Ryan, having four children can become a 'luxury experience' for families wealthy enough to cover the additional costs. She pointed to expenses such as school fees, larger cars, extra hotel rooms when travelling and childcare.
She also suggested that celebrities may have an easier time managing larger families because they can afford to employ additional nannies.
Ryan was careful to distinguish wealthy parents with several children from the criticism she had directed at people she believed were misusing state support.
'Not to say they're not good parents,' she said, before making her controversial claim that there is 'no normal, smart, sane, middle-class person who has more than two kids'.

Ryan Is a Mother of Four Herself
Ryan's comments have attracted particular attention because she is raising four children.
The Canadian comedian has an older daughter, Violet, from a previous relationship. She also has three younger children with her husband, Bobby Kootstra: son Fred, daughter Fenna and their youngest child, Holland.
Ryan has previously spoken openly about the realities of parenting four children. In an interview with RTÉ in June 2026, she described parenting her younger children as 'intense' and said she and Kootstra share the responsibility while also having a babysitter.
In a January 2026 interview with the Los Angeles Times, Ryan also discussed how parenting has become part of her comedy, while explaining that she tries not to make her children themselves the punchline.

Ryan on Life With Four Children
Ryan has not hidden the challenges of raising a large family.
Speaking to Hello! about her fourth child, Holland, she said she had already decided the baby would be her last because she felt there was no longer enough attention to go around and worried that one of her children could miss out.
She has also previously spoken about how different life became after having more children.
In a 2024 interview with The Independent, Ryan discussed feeding her children and the difficulties of dealing with a fussy eater. At the time, she described the contrast between life with her eldest daughter and the demands that came with having younger children.
Those earlier comments provide some context for why Ryan has spoken so openly about the practical demands of raising multiple children.

Ryan's remarks ultimately tie the question of family size to two issues she frequently discusses in her comedy and interviews: money and parenting.
