When Uma Thurman's character, The Bride, steps into the fight scenes of Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill: Volume 1, her yellow-and-black trainers are almost as recognisable as the yellow jumpsuit itself. For years, those trainers have commonly been identified as the Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66.
However, Onitsuka Tiger's official brand history identifies the onscreen shoes as the Tai-Chi—and the low-profile model is now available in Britain again at £140.
But here's where things get complicated. In an interview with British Vogue, Kill Bill costume designer Catherine Thomas referred to the trainers as Mexico 66s. But Onitsuka Tiger's own archive identify it as the Tai-Chi.
The Trainer Behind the Film
Tarantino's Kill Bill wardrobe drew heavily on martial arts cinema, with The Bride's yellow-and-black look providing one of the film's most memorable visual references. The outfit was closely associated with Bruce Lee's appearance in the unfinished film Game of Death, in which the martial arts star wore a distinctive yellow tracksuit.
The connection between Lee's costume and The Bride's look has been widely documented. Tarantino drew extensively on the visual language of Lee's movie, and the yellow outfit became one of the clearest references to those influences in Kill Bill.
The footwear completed the look. Onitsuka Tiger's own history of the model states that the Tai-Chi became widely associated with Kill Bill after Uma Thurman wore it in the film. Contemporary reporting from 2003 likewise identified the yellow-and-black footwear as Onitsuka Tiger Tai-Chi martial arts shoes.
A limited-edition yellow-and-black Tai-Chi release produced for the film was reported in 2003 to be limited to 3,400 pairs worldwide.
The Tai-Chi has a noticeably flatter and more understated appearance than the better-known Mexico 66. Its simple construction, thin rubber sole and low profile give it a distinctive martial-arts-inspired character, helping it sit naturally within The Bride's stripped-back yellow-and-black costume.
The trainer may have played a supporting role in the film, but its appearance became closely associated with one of Kill Bill's most recognisable visual details.
How the Mexico 66 Took the Spotlight
So why is the Mexico 66 so often associated with Kill Bill?
Part of the answer may simply be the Mexico 66's much greater visibility. The model has become one of Onitsuka Tiger's best-known lifestyle trainers, with its distinctive side stripes and retro running-shoe shape making it a familiar reference point for people trying to identify the brand's footwear.
The Mexico 66 has also been produced in yellow-and-black colourways, making the visual connection with The Bride's costume particularly easy to make. Over time, that association appears to have helped reinforce the identification of the Mexico 66 with the film.
A Low-Profile Comeback
The renewed attention arrives at a time when slimmer trainers have become increasingly prominent in fashion.
After years in which chunky trainers and substantial retro runners were highly visible, low-profile designs have increasingly returned to fashion coverage. British fashion publications have highlighted the rise of slimmer, flatter trainers, with their pared-back proportions offering an alternative to bulkier silhouettes.
The Tai-Chi fits naturally into that movement. Its low profile gives it a distinctly different character from the oversized trainers that have been prominent in recent years. The simple construction and thin sole give it a vintage sportswear appearance without relying on the exaggerated proportions found on many modern retro runners.
The silhouette also fits comfortably within the broader revival of late-1990s and early-2000s fashion. Slim trainers have become increasingly prominent alongside straight-leg denim, track trousers, skirts and other casual styling associated with the period.

The current Tai-Chi OG is priced at £140 in the UK and retains the defining characteristics of the model, including its low-profile construction and slim rubber sole. The yellow-and-black version recalls the colour combination associated with The Bride's footwear in Kill Bill.
For collectors, the appeal extends beyond the colourway. The model occupies an unusual place at the intersection of footwear, film, and martial arts culture. It is closely associated with Kill Bill, yet remains considerably less familiar to the wider public than the Mexico 66.
