Kristen Bell told listeners of her husband Dax Shepard's podcast Armchair Expert on Monday, 26 October that she reads her husband complimenting other people as him flirting with her. 'That's flirting with me because he just made someone else feel good,' she said.
The example she gave was a restaurant. Dax Shepard will tell a waiter or waitress, 'Wow, you have incredible eyelashes, gorgeous eyes,' and praise their work, and Bell reads it as a signal meant for her. 'That's how I know you're flirting with me a lot,' she said, adding that she knows 'he's just being the best boy'.
She was speaking on Shepard's podcast her Nobody Wants This co-stars Adam Brody, Justine Lupe, and Timothy Simons, who had come on to talk about the show's third season.
The Case for Reading It Kindly
Bell's own explanation went further than the clip that travelled. The compliment costs Shepard nothing, she said, because 'he's going to have zero interaction with this girl for the rest of his life', and the chances of another conversation are 'so microscopic.'
What she described liking was the habit rather than the exchange: 'To know that my partner actively smiles at people and gives them compliments, that gets me going.'
Plenty of people read it the same way. On that view Bell was describing something fairly ordinary, which is finding her husband attractive when he is being generous to strangers. One viewer summed it up as her simply being attracted to her husband being kind to other people. Others called the comment sweet, and one called it the healthiest relationship take they had heard in a while.
Some of the warmth was for the pairing rather than the point. 'They seem to match each other's freak,' one reader wrote, in a thread where most of the replies were going the other way.

Where the Goodwill Ran Out
The objections split into two kinds, and only one of them was about flirting.
The first was practical. Several people pointed out that the waitress in Bell's example has a job to do and no way of opting out of the exchange, and one said they could not imagine standing there while a customer discussed their eyes in front of his wife. Another rejected the premise outright, saying that is simply not how flirting between spouses works.

The second objection was about volume. 'Girl, leave him or leave us out of it,' read the top comment on one widely shared thread. Another, close behind it, needed only one line: 'The more I learn about their marriage... The less I want to know.' A third suggested the couple were courting the backlash on purpose, and a reply to it put the motive down to money.
The Post Still Hanging Over It
In the past, the couple have made strange and controversial comments that also made people question their relationship to each other. In October 2025, Bell marked their 12th anniversary with an Instagram post quoting Shepard telling her 'I would never kill you', followed by a line about men who have killed their wives.
The post was criticised for making light of domestic violence, not least because it went up during Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Bell restricted the comments on it and did not respond to the criticism.
Shepard did address it, on the same podcast where this week's remark was made. He said he had no idea it was happening. 'I was alerted by someone that this whole thing was happening,' he said. 'I didn't know, and Kristen knew through her publicist but didn't tell me.'
That post resurfaced in this week's threads within the first hour, which suggests some of those replying were judging this week's remark against last year's. Several of those arguing about the anniversary caption concluded it had obviously been a joke, and one noted that Bell had seemed to find it funny herself.
