Five days without a reply might barely qualify as ghosting, but apparently Madonna runs her collaboration inbox on a much tighter schedule.
The Queen of Pop raised eyebrows while accepting Best Collaboration with Sabrina Carpenter at the 2026 MTV VMAs, where their track 'Bring Your Love' took home the trophy. Rather than sticking to the usual thank-yous, Madonna revealed that getting Carpenter into the studio initially required some persistence.
The story was possibly delivered with a wink, but not everyone heard the punchline the same way. Madonna's tale of waiting five days for Carpenter's camp divided viewers between those who thought she sounded wildly impatient and those wondering how anyone missed such an obvious joke.
Madonna Waited Five Whole Days
'Everybody who knows me knows how impatient I am,' Madonna began, effectively supplying her own disclaimer before telling the story.
Then came the number that launched the debate. 'When five days passed, and I still didn't get connected with Sabrina and didn't hear back from her about whether she wanted to do a song with me, five days, I DM'ed her,' Madonna recalled. Apparently, going around the middlemen worked.
Carpenter answered the message herself, and Madonna said the pair were in the studio together within weeks. 'It was fabulous,' she added.
There was no tale of an industry feud, unanswered messages stretching into oblivion, or Carpenter personally leaving Madonna on read. There was, however, Madonna placing comic emphasis on having survived all five days.
Carpenter reportedly offered a clarification of her own onstage, noting that her team does respond, but she happens to answer her DMs faster. And thus, a successful collaboration somehow acquired the world's shortest ghosting controversy.
Was Madonna Out of Touch or Just Impatient?
Unlike the Queen of Pop and the 'Espresso' singer, Reddit users were not as united. Some viewers took the speech at face value and thought calling attention to the delayed response put Carpenter in an uncomfortable position. One described Madonna as 'awkward and weird,' while another argued that Carpenter's defence of her team was what made the exchange feel uncomfortable.
Others saw something different: Madonna playfully making herself the butt of the joke.
'Because 5 whole days is a really long time?' one Redditor asked sarcastically. 'I think that was the joke,' another replied. 'She mentioned being impatient and having to wait 5 whole days.'
Someone else was even less convinced there was awkwardness to dissect: 'Awkward to who? Lol'
Several Days, Several Interpretations
That fandom disagreement continued throughout the discussion. One commenter called the exchange 'just lighthearted' and insisted Carpenter was fine with it. Another countered that it was 'absolutely awkward,' arguing that Carpenter simply handled the moment well.
Still, there is at least one part of the story nobody needs to interpret. Madonna eventually bypassed the waiting game, Carpenter answered, and 'Bring Your Love' happened.
The collaboration ultimately won them a VMA, which is a fairly convincing argument that whatever happened during those five supposedly unbearable days still led to a hit song. Whether it was a jab or a joke, perhaps the most entertaining takeaway from the VMAs speech is that Madonna's patience apparently comes with a five-day expiration date.
