'She was a bad Barbie; she'd be a bad Britney.' That was just one of the many harsh comments after rumours broke that Margot Robbie could be in talks to play the pop icon in her upcoming biopic. Another comment was asking why the role isn't going to someone in their early twenties, while someone else pointed out that Hollywood needs to accept Robbie's actual age.
The backlash erupted after reports that Robbie was being considered for The Woman in Me, the film adaptation of Britney Spears' bestselling memoir. Universal Pictures announced the project in 2024, with Jon M. Chu attached to direct. Comments piled up with a wall of 'No's', while other fans openly said they were praying it was fake news.
Why Fans Think She Isn't a Good Fit
Britney was 16 when '...Baby One More Time' turned her into a household name, and the years her memoir dwells on most closely are those teenage ones. Robbie is 35, which puts nearly two decades between the actress and the version of Britney most readers actually want to see on screen. The age gap is a valid criticism, and fans aren't letting it slide.
It goes beyond the age gap too. There's a growing sense among fans that Robbie has 'a completely different vibe' to Britney altogether, and that casting should come down to who genuinely suits the part rather than who happens to be well known and good looking. That frustration keeps circling back to the same complaint: too many biopics lean on the same handful of A-listers when there's no shortage of talent waiting for a shot, blonde actresses included. For some, the conversation has moved past appearance entirely, with calls for a Black actress to take the role and a reminder that Hollywood has a habit of overlooking exactly the kind of performer this part deserves.

Her Talent Isn't the Question
Nobody in the comments is disputing that she can act. Beneath the outrage, plenty of people still admire Robbie as an actress. They just don't think she's right for this one, and it's hard to argue with her résumé.
She earned an Oscar nomination for I, Tonya, showed her acting range as Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad, carried Barbie to well over a billion dollars at the global box office, and produced Saltburn through her own company, LuckyChap Entertainment.
Britney Biopic Still in the Works
Robbie has addressed this rumour in the past. Back in 2023, she firmly denied any involvement at the Gotham Awards, insisting it was 'not true' while adding she loved Britney. That was also the same year she starred in Greta Gerwig's Barbie, the film that would go on to define her career.
Chu has also denied the casting rumours, stating on social media earlier this year that there had been no casting talks and that production was still in its early stages. Despite that, the rumour has refused to die. Universal Pictures has kept details tightly under wraps, leaving fans to argue it out in the comments with no official casting news to work from.
