Yvette Harrison packed up a pair of 12-year-old shoes she could never replace and sent them to Law Roach's London hotel, with no guarantee she would ever see them again. Then Zendaya wore them on the streets of New York and became one of the talking points of The Odyssey press tour outfits.
Now the Maryland fan has her heels back undamaged, plus a personal surprise from the designer herself. But the shoes were only part of what came back to her, and the route they took to Zendaya's feet began with a request even the designer's own archive could not fill.
How an Instagram Plea Found the Pair
Roach wanted Sophia Webster's Fall 2014 Clementine gladiators for the Odyssey press tour, a style long out of production. Webster did own a black pair, but they were the wrong size. She explained on an Instagram reel that the request was 'very specific and intentional', making a near miss impossible.
'So my last hope was Instagram,' Webster said. She asked her followers for the exact pair and waited.
Harrison replied straight away. The Clementines were the first Sophia Webster design she had ever bought, and the prospect of Zendaya wearing them had her saying, 'Oh my gosh'. She sent them off without hesitation, an instant yes from someone who owed the industry nothing, and the parcel reached Roach's hotel.
When Zendaya stepped out in New York, the sandals went viral. 'When she wore them, we were all screaming,' Webster said.
Crowdsourcing Red-Carpet Style
The story raises an awkward question for luxury styling. Archives, showrooms and personal contacts are supposed to cover a request like this, yet the answer came from an Instagram post and a follower with a shoe in her cupboard.
Some will see a lovely act of generosity. Others will see a huge gamble, since Harrison held a single, irreplaceable pair.
Webster says the demand did not stop with Zendaya. 'Ever since, we have had a lot of requests to bring that style back,' she said. Whether the brand answers them remains to be seen.
Rewarding a Hero With Her Dream Paloma Heels
The heels came home safely, and Webster teased followers with a video asking whether Harrison had her shoes back. She had, and a heartfelt unboxing showed what else was in the parcel: a pair of signature Paloma heels, a necklace and butterfly-themed accessories.
The gift carried extra weight because of what Harrison had been through. 'This past year, I went through thyroid cancer, I underwent two surgeries, and I just made a promise to myself to really appreciate all the joys in life,' she shared on her personal Instagram. Webster called her a 'hero'.
Law Roach had the vision and Sophia Webster had the name, but neither of them had the shoe; only a Maryland fan did. Harrison also had a view on the main event. She said Zendaya's walk made it look as though the shoes were 'literally made for her'.
The heartfelt story leaves fashion with something no archive can hold: the trust of a fan who parted with a pair she could never replace. Fan culture is no longer just watching the red carpet, because it is now co-styling it.
