The post says Nathan was removed from Nelson's custody and spent several years in foster care before Eminem gained custody of him in the early 2000s. It also says a social worker raised the possibility of Munchausen syndrome by proxy, a condition involving the falsification or induction of illness in another person, often a child.
These remain allegations, not findings of abuse or a confirmed diagnosis, and Nelson, who died in December 2024, told her side of the story in her 2008 memoir My Son Marshall, My Son Eminem. In a 1999 interview, Eminem made his own accusations, saying his mother stole his pay cheques, often kicked him out of the house and abused pills and drugs. Nelson denied using drugs.
What the 1996 Case Reportedly Said
A published profile appears to support part of the Reddit post's account. It says a social worker told the juvenile court that Nelson had a suspicious, almost paranoid personality and raised the possibility of Munchausen syndrome by proxy. The profile discusses the allegation in connection with Nathan's case but does not report a formal diagnosis.
The profile also draws largely on Nelson's memoir and Eminem's lyrics rather than citing the court records directly. The details should therefore be treated as reported claims, not established findings.
How the Pain Reached the Music
The family dispute soon became public through Eminem's music. His 1999 single 'My Name Is' referred to his mother's alleged drug use, and Nelson sued him for defamation over his accusations.
The case resulted in a $25,000 payout in 2001, but a judge ruled that most of the money belonged to Nelson's lawyer, leaving her about $1,600. She later said the lawsuit had been her lawyer's idea.
Eminem returned to the subject in 2002 with 'Cleanin' Out My Closet', which described his childhood grievances and claimed he had been a victim of Munchausen syndrome by proxy. The song reflects his own account and does not establish a diagnosis. Nelson also released a response track, 'Dear Marshall', adding another public chapter to their family dispute.
The Brother He Took In
Nathan was born in 1986, when Eminem was 13, and was placed in foster care as a child. In a 2004 interview, Eminem recalled, 'I cried just going to see him at the foster home.' He also said he had tried to apply for full custody when he was 20 but 'didn't have the means'.
Eminem eventually gained custody when Nathan was 16, after his music career had taken off. Nathan, who has worked as a DJ and musician under the name Nate Kane, spoke about his older brother's influence in a podcast appearance in February 2023.
'He was the best role model I could have had to help me be the dad that I am today,' Nathan said.
A Softer Tone Over Time
Eminem's tone towards his mother changed over the years. In 'Headlights', released in 2013, he apologised for how he had portrayed her in earlier songs and reflected on the anger behind their strained relationship. In an interview, he also said, 'Even though we don't really speak, she is my mother, I do love her.'
Nelson died in December 2024, aged 69, after a battle with lung cancer. At the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on 7 December, Eminem reportedly skipped a pointed line about her in 'Without Me' and let the crowd sing it instead. However, reports note that he had also skipped the line at earlier performances, including before her death. He has not publicly explained why.
Nathan wrote on social media, 'Hatred and mixed emotions today', but it remains unclear what prompted the message. Taken together, the story captures a contradiction at the heart of Eminem's career. The artist who wrote furiously about his mother also took responsibility for his younger brother.
