Sandra Bullock has revealed the extraordinary lengths she once went to protect her son Louis from paparazzi during the intensely publicised breakdown of her marriage to Jesse James, recalling how the experience fundamentally changed her approach to privacy.
Speaking to longtime friend Jennifer Aniston for Interview magazine, Bullock recalled hiding her then-newborn son inside a hockey bag as media attention surrounding her personal life intensified in 2010. At the time, the actress had kept her adoption of Louis private and was determined to shield him from photographers.
Hiding From the Paparazzi
Bullock explained that she discovered hockey bags while clearing out a wardrobe and realised they could provide a discreet way to leave her home without attracting attention. As the scandal surrounding her marriage escalated, she said she needed to find a way to get Louis safely into the car without being photographed.
'I put him in his car carrier, put it in the hockey bag, and zipped the hockey bag around him,' Bullock recalled.
The actress said the experience contributed to the importance she now places on protecting her family's privacy. Describing the precautions she had to take, Bullock compared the effort to operating 'like the CIA,' while reflecting on how vulnerable private information can become when people close to celebrities see an opportunity to profit from it.
A Scandalous Divorce
Bullock and James married in 2005. In March 2010, reports emerged alleging that James had been unfaithful during their marriage, triggering a major media scandal. James publicly apologised, while Bullock withdrew from the public spotlight and went into seclusion with Louis.
Bullock filed for divorce in April 2010, and the divorce was finalised in June. Meanwhile, she was privately navigating motherhood. Bullock and James had begun the adoption process for Louis before their marriage broke down, and Louis came into their lives around the end of 2009 or the beginning of 2010.
The couple deliberately kept the adoption private until after the 2010 Academy Awards. Bullock subsequently confirmed that she had adopted Louis and announced that she would raise him as a single mother.
A Meaningful Experience
Bullock has also reflected on how that turbulent period influenced her work. Discussing Gravity, which she filmed in 2011 before its 2013 release, she described the film as one of the most meaningful experiences of her career because it paralleled what she was experiencing privately.
The production required Bullock to spend long periods alone inside a confined set, an experience she said gave her considerable time to think while she was grieving, adjusting to motherhood and raising her young son.
More than 16 years after the scandal, Bullock's recollection offers a more personal perspective on a period that was dominated by headlines about her marriage. Behind the public fallout surrounding her divorce from James, she was simultaneously trying to protect a newborn child and establish a private family life away from an intensely intrusive media spotlight.
Bullock is now preparing to return to the big screen in Practical Magic 2, the sequel to her 1998 fantasy film with Nicole Kidman. The film is scheduled to open in North American cinemas on 11 September 2026, with international releases beginning on 9 September.
