Swatch's newest luxury collaboration has sparked a global buying frenzy—and now flippers are attempting to cash in with eye-watering resale prices online.
The Swiss watch giant officially unveiled its Swatch x Audemars Piguet 'Royal Pop' collection this month, marking the first-ever collaboration between the two iconic brands. But within hours of release, resale listings began appearing online at prices far above retail.
The collection, which starts at approximately $400, is now being listed by some resellers for several thousand dollars, with select sellers charging up to $15,000 for certain models.
Social media posts tracking the resale market quickly went viral after screenshots surfaced showing dramatic markups on sites including eBay and StockX.
One Instagram account dedicated to watch culture shared multiple listings with prices ranging from $2,000 to over $10,000 shortly after launch, as hype around the collaboration intensified online.
The frenzy surrounding the release has drawn comparisons to Swatch's previous MoonSwatch launches with Omega, which also triggered massive queues and resale mania worldwide. However, the new Audemars Piguet collaboration took fans by surprise thanks to its unusual concept.
Audemars Piguet's Royal Oak Gets a Playful Swatch Makeover
Rather than releasing a traditional wristwatch, Swatch and Audemars Piguet introduced a collection of colorful Bioceramic pocket watches inspired by the luxury brand's legendary Royal Oak design.
According to WatchTime, the collection features eight 'Royal Pop' models split into two classic pocket-watch formats, Lépine and Savonnette. The watches incorporate signature Royal Oak elements, including the octagonal bezel and exposed screws, while blending them with Swatch's bold, playful aesthetic.
The collaboration has been described as a more accessible interpretation of one of the world's most recognizable luxury watch designs.
Retail pricing begins at around $400 for the standard versions, making the watches significantly cheaper than traditional Audemars Piguet timepieces, which often cost tens of thousands of dollars.
Each model features colorful detailing, a hand-wound SISTEM51 mechanical movement, and styling that allows the watches to be worn as necklaces, clipped to bags, or carried traditionally as pocket watches.
The unusual concept immediately divided watch enthusiasts online, with some praising the collaboration's creativity while others questioned the decision to transform the Royal Oak into a fashion-forward pocket watch.
Still, the controversy only appeared to fuel demand further.
Crowds, overnight queues, and resale chaos erupt worldwide
The launch quickly descended into chaos at several Swatch locations worldwide.
Videos circulating on social media showed enormous crowds gathering outside stores before opening, while some fans reportedly camped overnight to secure one of the watches.
According to Business Insider, some Swatch stores were temporarily forced to close due to crowd control and safety concerns amid surging global demand.
The hype has only intensified online resale activity.
Some listings have already sold at prices several times higher than retail, while others remain posted at extreme asking prices as sellers attempt to capitalize on the viral buzz surrounding the collection.
Despite the frenzy, Swatch reportedly stated that the Royal Pop collection is not a limited-edition release and that more stock will continue to arrive in stores over time.
That hasn't stopped flippers from treating the collaboration like one of the hottest luxury drops of the year, with resale prices continuing to climb as collectors scramble to get their hands on the latest Swatch sensation.
