Thom Browne turned the runway into an extravagant insect garden as he unveiled his Spring 2027 collection at New York Fashion Week, sending a parade of wildly imaginative shoes down the catwalk.
The designer's latest collection drew inspiration from the 1998 Disney film A Bug's Life, translating its tiny creatures into exaggerated silhouettes, colourful tailoring and theatrical accessories. Among the most eye-catching pieces were Browne's statement pumps, which transformed classic footwear into bugs complete with antennae, eyes, wings and other fantastical details.
The show took place at The Shed at Hudson Yards on 15 September, bringing New York Fashion Week to a close with a collection that embraced insects from head to toe. The nature-inspired setting featured elements including a chrysalis and daisy, reinforcing the collection's garden-like atmosphere.
From A Bug's Life to Fashion Week
Browne's insect obsession extended well beyond the shoes. His signature tailoring was decorated with creatures including ants, dragonflies, caterpillars, moths, flies and beetles, while dresses and coats took on rounded, cocoon-like forms. Butterfly wings were also translated into dramatic garments and accessories.
The designer previously described the Disney film as 'a charming kind of nonsensical story that was fun to play with', offering a clue to the playful spirit behind the collection.
That sense of fantasy was particularly clear in the footwear, where familiar pumps were given an elaborate insect makeover.
Pumps Become Colourful Insects
Several pairs of cap-toe pumps featured bug eyes and antennae, with some of the details extending from the shoes in three-dimensional form. One grey and blue design had a fuzzy white section at the back, while another red, black and white spotted pair echoed the appearance of a ladybird.
The shoes retained recognisable Browne signatures despite their surreal details. They featured slightly squared toes, tall, slim block heels and buckled ankle straps, creating a polished foundation for the playful embellishments.
Other T-strap pumps carried three-dimensional winged insects across the vamp, making the footwear look as though tiny creatures had landed directly on the shoes.
Butterfly Wings Take Centre Stage
The collection's most dramatic footwear moments came in the form of platform pumps with oversized butterfly wings.
The winged designs appeared in several colourways, while one crystal-embellished version offered an especially dazzling take on the theme. Rather than simply adding a small insect motif, Browne transformed the shoes into miniature pieces of fantasy, with the wings becoming the defining feature.
The theatrical footwear fitted seamlessly into a show built around transformation. The wider collection explored metamorphosis through butterflies, beetles and other insects, while the set reinforced the idea of creatures emerging and changing form.
A Playful Take on Classic Thom Browne
Not every shoe abandoned Browne's familiar language. Some models wore classic brogue pumps, paired with his instantly recognisable red, white and blue crisscross leg straps.
That contrast helped make the more unusual designs stand out. Traditional Browne footwear sat alongside pumps resembling insects, creating a balance between the label's preppy tailoring codes and the exaggerated fantasy of the collection.
The approach also follows Browne's continuing experimentation with footwear. His Spring 2026 collection included trompe-l'oeil designs that made shoes appear to combine heels and socks, showing his willingness to turn familiar footwear into something visually unexpected.

The result was a collection in which the shoes were not simply accessories but part of the show's wider transformation from fashion presentation into a fantasy garden. Every pair helped reinforce Browne's playful vision, turning the runway into a world where insects and fashion collided in unexpected ways.
