Vincent D'Onofrio has publicly supported his Daredevil co-star, Deborah Ann Woll, after criticism of her role in God of War: Laufey and calls to boycott the game.

D'Onofrio responded on X after an account called for a boycott of God of War: Laufey and criticised Sony Santa Monica for making Faye the game's central character. The account accused the studio of choosing feminism over its jobs and urged fans to boycott the game.

'Not that you asked, but... in no way do I agree with you,' D'Onofrio wrote. He described Woll as 'beautiful and extremely talented'.

'She is as smart as a whip and a complete nerd. Also incredibly kind. How perfect she is! And a good friend.'

D'Onofrio also reaffirmed his support for the God of War franchise and said he looks forward to playing the new game with his son.

Her Take on the Backlash

Woll previously addressed the backlash to God of War: Laufey at a Florida Supercon signing event in July, responding to a fan's question.

'Genuinely, I thought I was going to be much more affected by it,' she said. 'But one, I'm not on social media, so that helps. And two, I feel totally unbothered because I know it's great. It's fine if it's not your cup of tea, but in no universe is it bad.'

The actress plays Faye, also known as Laufey, in the upcoming PlayStation 5 game.

In Norse mythology, Laufey is Loki's mother; however, the God of War series reimagines her as a Jötunn warrior, Kratos's wife, and Atreus's mother.

Faye dies before the events of God of War: Laufey. The new game follows her journey as she awakens in the Everywhen, a realm where gods go after death.

Online Debates

Some online criticism centres specifically on Faye's appearance and comparisons to Woll.

One X user praised Sony Santa Monica's armour and weapon designs but criticised complaints that the character is overly de-sexualised.

Another post presented the opposite perspective. The user suggested Faye's appearance is intentionally less attractive than Woll's and claimed modern developers 'uglify women on purpose'.

A reply argued that complaints about Woll being made 'ugly' reflect unrealistic expectations of women's appearance. It cited factors like makeup, lighting, ageing, and video-game rendering.

Other users challenged defenders of the character's appearance. One post dismissed these responses as 'white-knighting a woman video game character'.

These posts reveal divided opinions on Faye's character design. They raise questions about who defines appropriate female character appearance and what standards guide design choices.

Kratos Still Returns

Apart from the discussion about Woll's appearance, some God of War fans have also criticised the game's shift in focus away from Kratos.

Cory Barlog explained that Laufey lets the series focus on a different character in the God of War universe and offers a unique experience compared with the previous games.

'While God of War: Laufey is a different thing, it's still part of the larger tapestry of what we truly want to explore with all these different characters in there,' Barlog said. 'But there's always going to be Kratos games throughout the whole history.'

Sony Santa Monica confirmed that Kratos will stay part of the franchise, with many more stories planned for the character. God of War: Laufey will launch exclusively for PlayStation 5 on 16 February 2027.
