An unnamed woman slapped a male passenger and raised an alarm after he allegedly touched her inappropriately several times on a Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation bus on Friday, 24 July, prompting her to confront him and call for help.
The incident happened at about 12:15 p.m. on route 500D as the bus travelled along the Outer Ring Road from Hebbal towards Manyata Tech Park. Although many viewers praised her for fighting back, others criticised the force used against the accused, with some claiming he appeared mentally unwell, before he escaped and could be handed over to police.
The Woman Raised the Alarm
According to BMTC staff, the woman confronted the passenger after the alleged repeated touching and struck him while calling for help. Driver Praveen stopped the bus, locked its doors and questioned the man as passengers recorded the confrontation. The footage, which spread across Instagram and other platforms over the weekend, captures part of the tense exchange after the bus stopped.
The situation escalated when the accused allegedly removed his shirt, spat in the driver's face and tried to flee. Praveen attempted to restrain him, but traffic began building behind the stationary bus and the vehicle had to be moved. When the doors were opened, the man reportedly escaped, and no arrest had been publicly confirmed by the time the video went viral.
Driver Says Man Had Been Removed Earlier
Praveen said the same man may have boarded the bus at about 8:15 a.m. and been removed after allegedly misbehaving with another woman. 'He appears to be a habitual offender who targets women travelling in relatively empty buses,' the driver said. He added that colleagues had seen the passenger on other buses and claimed the man used a daily pass before sitting close to seats commonly occupied by women.
That detail suggested the confrontation may not have begun with the incident caught on camera. The woman's identity has not been released, and there has been no public statement from her detailing what happened before filming started. The accused has also not been publicly identified, meaning the allegations have not been tested in court.
Viewers Question Her Response
Much of the first wave of reaction praised the woman for immediately drawing attention to the alleged harassment. One widely shared Instagram caption read, 'Salute to the courage of the girl who fought back,' while other users demanded that authorities identify the man. The clip also circulated with calls for passengers and transport staff to intervene rather than ignore harassment in public spaces.
However, some viewers criticised the woman and driver for hitting the accused, claiming he appeared 'mentally unstable' and arguing that she should have 'let him go'. No verified medical information about the man has been made public, and behaviour shown in a short video cannot establish a mental health condition.
