Angelina Jolie has one of Hollywood's most detailed tattoo collections, but the large designs across her back are more than decoration. Many of the markings are sacred Sak Yant tattoos tied to protection, good fortune and important parts of her life.
The actress has built the collection over more than two decades, with several pieces created by Thai Sak Yant master Ajarn Noo Kanpai. Yet not every symbol can be neatly translated, and at least one of the most complex designs was made especially for Jolie, with its complete meaning not publicly decoded.
The Five Lines That Started It
One of Jolie's best-known tattoos sits on her left shoulder blade and is made up of five vertical lines of sacred script. She received the Ha Taew, or Five Rows, design from Ajarn Noo Kanpai in Thailand on 23 April 2003. At the time, reports described the tattoo as a design meant to ward off bad luck.
The Ha Taew is a form of Sak Yant, a sacred tattoo tradition from Southeast Asia that combines symbols, script and spiritual blessings. Ajarn Noo has explained that his Five Rows design is meant to bring positive and balanced blessings into a person's life. The tattoo helped draw wider global attention to the Sak Yant tradition after Jolie began showing it in public.
The tattoo is also widely linked to Jolie's son Maddox, whom she adopted from Cambodia in 2002. Reports have described the design as a Buddhist prayer connected with protection and good fortune. Jolie's ties to Cambodia grew after she filmed Lara Croft: Tomb Raider there and later became involved in humanitarian and conservation work in the country.
Her Back Grew More Detailed
Jolie added three large designs to her back while she was directing 'First They Killed My Father' in Cambodia in early 2016. Photos taken on set showed fresh markings down the centre of her back and over her right shoulder blade. A source familiar with the tattoos described the three designs as Buddhist blessings for 'peace, love and a prosperous life'.
The right shoulder design has been identified as Yant Kraw Petch, also known as Diamond Armour. Traditional explanations connect this Yant with protection, good fortune, virtue and success. Like other Sak Yant designs, however, its meaning comes from a spiritual tradition, so it should not be treated as a simple word-for-word message.
The large design running through the middle of Jolie's back is even harder to decode. Sak Yant sources identify it as a custom Yant ViHan Pha Chad Sada, with a square section linked to the four continents and the elements of earth, water, wind and fire. Ajarn Noo has reportedly given only the broad explanation of 'protection' for the custom work, meaning claims that fully translate every part should be treated with care.
'Know Your Rights' Has a Clear Message
Not everything on Jolie's back requires knowledge of sacred symbols to understand. Near the top is the phrase 'Know Your Rights', a tattoo she has spoken about herself. Jolie explained in a 2006 interview that the words were connected to the importance of people, including refugees, trafficked children and vulnerable women, understanding the rights available to them.
The phrase also comes from 'Know Your Rights' by The Clash, something Jolie has previously confirmed. The song was released by the British punk band in 1982, and the words became one of the more direct messages in her tattoo collection. Unlike some of her Sak Yant designs, there is little need to guess what the phrase itself says.
Not Every Symbol Can Be Fully Decoded
Online guides often give very exact translations for Jolie's tattoos, but some of those claims go further than the available evidence. Sak Yant designs combine sacred script, geometry, prayers and blessings, and Ajarn Noo has said that knowing the correct mantras is an important part of the tradition. Simply looking at the shapes does not always reveal everything they are meant to carry.
That is especially important with Jolie's custom centre-back tattoo. Sources specialising in Sak Yant say parts of its writing are arranged so that outsiders cannot reliably interpret its complete meaning, while the publicly stated meaning is broadly protection. It would therefore be misleading to claim that every square, line or symbol on Jolie's back has a confirmed public translation.
What can be documented is the larger story behind the ink. Jolie's back combines blessings associated with protection and fortune, a tiger linked to her Cambodian connection, and a direct message about knowing one's rights. More than 20 years after she received her Five Rows tattoo, those layered meanings are still why her back ink continues to attract attention whenever she wears a dress that puts it on display.
