Celebrity manicurist Tom Bachik recently gave Hathaway a manicure for the Los Angeles premiere of The End of Oak Street, transforming an otherwise straightforward milky nail into something juicier. The refreshingly simple manicure channelled cracked coconut flesh under glass. It was sheer and glossy enough to let a little au naturel nail peek through. Better yet, it comes without several centimetres of nail standing between you and everyday life.
Suddenly, everyday tasks like typing or waving at your fans feel fashionable without the struggle.
What Are Coconut Jelly Nails?
Despite the delicious name, no actual coconuts need to be cracked for the manicure.
Coconut jelly nails get their name from their semi-translucent, milky appearance. Rather than coating the nail in an opaque white polish, the look relies on sheer layers that create a soft white wash with visible depth underneath.
The finishing touch is shine. Lots of it. A glossy top coat gives the manicure its almost wet-looking finish, creating the plump, glassy appearance responsible for the 'jelly' half of its name.
Hathaway wore hers relatively short and neatly shaped, proving once again that statement nails do not necessarily need their own postcode.
Bachik shared a closer look at the manicure on Instagram, calling it a 'Coconut Jelly Gloss Mani' and revealing that he used Essie's Nail Art Studio Jelly Gloss Polish in Arctic Jelly.

Apply two or three thin coats depending on how translucent you want the finished manicure to look. The aim is buildable milky depth, not complete coverage.
