A growing body of research suggests that improving brain health may be about more than eating nutritious foods. Doctors are increasingly exploring whether the timing of meals could influence memory, cognitive performance and even the long-term risk of dementia.

A new study has added weight to that idea, finding that adults who limited their daily eating to an eight-hour window performed better on memory and problem-solving tests than those who ate over a longer period. While experts stress that the findings are preliminary, they say the research highlights how simple lifestyle changes may one day become part of broader strategies to support healthy ageing.

Why Meal Timing Matters

The latest research, conducted by Rutgers University in New Jersey, followed 47 women aged between 50 and 79 who were overweight or living with obesity. Participants were placed on a calorie-controlled weight-loss programme, but half were also instructed to eat only between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., creating an eating window of just over eight hours.

After six months, both groups lost a similar amount of weight, averaging around 15lbs (approximately 7kg). However, those following the shorter eating window achieved higher scores in tests measuring memory, spatial reasoning and problem-solving.

The findings were presented at Nutrition 2026, the annual meeting of the American Society for Nutrition, and suggest that reducing the number of hours spent eating each day could provide benefits beyond weight loss alone.

Doctors Explain The Potential Brain Benefits

Health experts believe there are several reasons why time-restricted eating may support brain health.

One theory centres on the body's circadian rhythm, often referred to as the internal body clock. Eating earlier in the day and avoiding late-night meals may help keep this natural rhythm in balance, allowing the body's metabolic processes to function more efficiently.

Experts also believe that extending the overnight fasting period may improve blood sugar regulation and reduce inflammation. Both high blood sugar and chronic inflammation have been linked to cognitive decline and an increased risk of developing dementia.

Longer fasting periods may also encourage the body to switch into repair mode, allowing cells to remove damaged components more efficiently through natural processes that researchers continue to investigate. While scientists are still studying these mechanisms, they believe they could contribute to healthier brain function over time.

What Researchers Found

Professor Sue Shapses, the study's principal investigator and a nutritional scientist at Rutgers University, said the findings point to the importance of considering not only what people eat, but also when they eat.

'These data suggest that there may be additional benefits if you stop eating four hours before going to sleep and reduce food intake to eight to nine hours per day, compared with the usual eating window of 12 hours per day,' she said.

Researchers also noted that losing excess weight remains an important way to lower dementia risk, meaning the benefits observed in the study may be the result of several healthy lifestyle factors working together.

A Promising But Early Study

Doctors caution against viewing the findings as proof that an eight-hour eating window prevents dementia. The trial involved only 47 participants, all of whom were women aged between 50 and 79 and living with overweight or obesity. As a result, the findings cannot yet be applied to the wider population.

Professor Wendy Hall, Head of Nutritional Sciences at King's College London, believes the approach is scientifically plausible but says larger studies are needed.

'Time-restricted eating is a plausible approach to supporting cognitive health in midlife and older adults with overweight, not only because it may help with weight management but also because avoiding large meals late in the evening may improve blood sugar control, vascular function and inflammation,' she explained.

Hall added that researchers still need peer-reviewed evidence to determine whether the improvements seen in the trial translate into meaningful reductions in dementia risk over the long term.

Simple Lifestyle Habits Still Matter

Although the study focused on meal timing, experts emphasise that it should not replace other proven ways of protecting brain health. Maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, getting enough sleep, managing blood pressure and diabetes, avoiding smoking and eating a balanced diet all remain important for reducing the risk of cognitive decline.

According to the Alzheimer's Society, around one million people in the UK are currently living with dementia, with that figure expected to rise to 1.4 million by 2040. Researchers estimate that many cases may be delayed or prevented through healthier lifestyle choices.

For people interested in trying time-restricted eating, doctors recommend making gradual changes rather than dramatically cutting meal times overnight. Finishing dinner earlier, avoiding late-night snacks and maintaining a consistent eating schedule may be a practical starting point. However, anyone with diabetes, certain medical conditions or a history of eating disorders should seek medical advice before beginning intermittent fasting.

While scientists continue to investigate the relationship between fasting and brain health, the latest findings suggest that when we eat could become an increasingly important part of the conversation around healthy ageing. More research is needed, but limiting food intake to an eight-hour window may prove to be one simple habit that supports both physical and cognitive wellbeing.
