Blackpink's Jennie has drawn differing reactions online after donning a vintage Alaïa bodysuit, a sheer purple leopard-print piece, when she joined The Weeknd on stage on Thursday 8 October. The Blackpink star performed their collaboration 'One of the Girls' on the second night of The Weeknd's After Hours Til Dawn Tour in Goyang, just outside Seoul.

The show was part of Hyundai Card's Super Concert series. It was reportedly the first time the two had sung the track live together. The song, which also features Lily-Rose Depp, first came out in 2023 on the soundtrack of The Idol.

While many fans praised the look, others said it falls flat next to Naomi Campbell's runway version, which is the outfit that inspired the look in the first place.

The bodysuit is reportedly from Alaïa's Fall/Winter 1991 collection. It features sheer leopard-print lace, deep purple velvet panels, a high neck and long sleeves, and looks almost black in some photos and a rich plum in others. Jennie wore it with knee-high boots, long straight hair with blunt bangs and lilac eyeshadow.

Campbell's History With Alaïa

Campbell has a long history with the designer. The V&A museum says her traveller's cheques were stolen during her first summer working in Paris, and Azzedine Alaïa offered her a place to stay. That began a close friendship, and she went on to work as his fit model. Her personal wardrobe includes leopard-print looks from his Autumn/Winter 1991 collection.

The museum's examples include a beige knitted leopard-print bodysuit, which is a different design from the lace-and-velvet piece Jennie wore. Reddit commenters compared her stage look with images of the original styling, which they linked to Campbell. One said: 'I think the tights were separate. Same as the gloves.' That claim has not been confirmed.

Fans Praise Jennie's Outfit Online

Reaction began on the night of the concert, with fans sharing clips of the performance on X. A fan account wrote: 'THE FIT HELLOOOOOO?????' The post gained tens of thousands of likes and hundreds of thousands of views. Another X user wrote: 'OH MY GOD JENNIE?!? THE OUTFIT', in a post with thousands of likes.

Many fans used the hashtag #JENNIExTheWeeknd. Others kept their reactions short, with one writing: 'SHE LOOKS INSANE' and another: 'The Fit and Hair is OMG'.

Others Say It Falls Flat Next to Campbell's

Not everyone, however, was impressed with Jennie's version of the outfit. Much of the Reddit discussion centred on how the piece compared with the original, Campbell's runway version. One commenter summed up the mood: 'She looks good, but Naomi is unreal'. Another wrote: 'It's such an unflattering bodysuit on anyone other than Naomi.'

A comment that gained more than 500 upvotes focused on the fit and styling: 'I don't like where the cups are sitting, it looks too low. And I don't know why she would get rid of the tights because those completed the look'.

Several commenters suggested the original was cut for runway models and would sit differently on a shorter frame, while another said the stage version appeared to use a higher-cut brief than the original. Neither theory has been confirmed.

Still, Jennie's version had defenders on Reddit, where it was shared on r/whatthefrockk in a post that credited stylist Sojung Jeanne Kim and gained hundreds of upvotes. In reply to a comment asking whether celebrities reference such looks to 'equate themselves with those living legends', one commenter wrote: 'Celebs and people have worn vintage designer stuff since vintage designer was a thing.' Another replied: 'I believe the more logical conclusion is that she liked the outfit so she wore it. Vintage fashion is trendy right now so everyone is doing it.'

Archival Alaïa Has Been Revived Before

Jennie has worn Alaïa before, including a cobalt-blue cut-out dress at the 2024 Met Gala. Archival pieces from the house have also been revived by other celebrities. Kylie Jenner wore an archival Alaïa leopard mesh and velvet dress during Paris Couture Week in January 2025, reportedly from the same 1991 collection. Related catsuit and maxi versions were worn by supermodels including Campbell and Claudia Schiffer.

The look also arrives as purple has reportedly gained traction in Korea's fashion and beauty markets under a trend nicknamed 'purple-core', or 'grape-core'. Online fashion platform Zigzag said that transactions for products tagged with purple-core rose 173% in September from a year earlier.
