Jennifer Lawrence once hit back at Harvey Weinstein after the disgraced Hollywood producer was accused of claiming that he had slept with the actress and had used their alleged relationship to impress another woman.

The claim emerged in December 2018 through a lawsuit filed by an unnamed woman, identified in court documents as Jane Doe. The woman accused Weinstein of sexual assault and discrimination.

The Powerful Hollywood Gatekeeper

According to the lawsuit, Weinstein allegedly boasted about having a sexual relationship with Lawrence after the woman rejected his advances.

The lawsuit alleged that Weinstein told the woman: 'I slept with Jennifer Lawrence and look where she is; she has just won an Oscar.'

The comment was reportedly made in the context of Weinstein attempting to establish himself as a powerful Hollywood gatekeeper.

Lawrence, however, strongly denied the claim.

'My heart breaks for all the women who were victimised by Harvey Weinstein,' the actress said at the time. She added that she had 'never had anything but a professional relationship with him' and described the alleged statement as another example of what she called his 'predatory tactics and lies' used to lure women.

A Professional Relationship

The allegation was particularly striking because Weinstein had been closely connected to Lawrence's early Hollywood career. The Weinstein Company distributed and produced Silver Linings Playbook, the 2012 film for which Lawrence won the Academy Award for Best Actress.

Lawrence had previously spoken about her professional relationship with Weinstein, saying he had never behaved inappropriately towards her. In comments reported in 2018, she recalled hearing that he was 'a dog' but said he had been 'almost paternal' towards her.

She also described their relationship as one in which she felt comfortable confronting him when she believed he was behaving badly.

Lawrence said she had called him an 'asshole' when he acted like one and recalled using the stronger description 'sadistic monster'.

'I Was Not Victimised'

Those earlier comments became particularly significant after Weinstein's name became synonymous with the sexual misconduct scandal that helped propel the #MeToo movement. Lawrence made clear that her own experience did not prevent her from supporting other women who had accused him.

'I was not victimised personally by Harvey Weinstein,' she said in a separate statement in February 2018, while expressing support for women who had accused him of abuse and calling for him to face justice.

The 2018 lawsuit that mentioned Lawrence was not brought by the actress, and she was not accused of participating in any wrongdoing. Her name appeared because the unnamed plaintiff alleged that Weinstein had invoked Lawrence while attempting to exert pressure and demonstrate his influence.

Weinstein's representatives denied the allegations in the lawsuit, including the claim that he had slept with Lawrence. His legal team described the claims as malicious and untrue.

Lawrence's response therefore served two purposes: she rejected the alleged sexual relationship outright while also using the moment to stand behind women who said Weinstein victimised them.

Years later, the episode remains a notable chapter in Lawrence's history with the producer, not because an affair between them was established, but because his alleged claim about the Oscar-winning actress became part of a wider legal account of the power and intimidation women said they experienced around him.
