Seth Rogen has carried one gloriously NSFW piece of Judd Apatow direction with him for nearly two decades: 'Less semen, more emotion.' Speaking on Sunday, 13 September, during a Visionaries conversation at the Toronto International Film Festival, the actor and filmmaker said Apatow shouted the line from another room while the cast of the 2007 comedy Knocked Up was improvising.

For Rogen, the note did not stay on that set. The Superbad co-writer and star of The Studio said he still returns to the phrase when a joke is working but the story needs something more human underneath it.

Apatow's Note Became a Filmmaking Rule

Rogen recalled that improvisation was a major part of making Knocked Up, which starred him opposite Katherine Heigl and was written and directed by Apatow. During one loose take, he said, 'Judd screamed from the other room, "Less semen, more emotion!"' The instruction was blunt, but Rogen said its meaning became clearer as he moved into writing, producing and directing his own work.

The advice also tracks closely with the film itself. Knocked Up begins with a one-night stand between Rogen's Ben Stone and Heigl's Alison Scott, then follows the pair after an unexpected pregnancy forces them into each other's lives. Its comedy repeatedly moves between explicit jokes, relationship conflict and the anxiety of two people deciding whether they can become a family, making Apatow's shouted note a concise description of the tonal balance the film was chasing.

Rogen described the lesson as learning 'how to balance humour and emotion and reality and comedy' without letting one side flatten the other. He said he and his collaborators still invoke Apatow's wording when they are making each other laugh but realise a scene has drifted too far from its emotional centre. What began as an improvised set correction effectively became shorthand for tone.

Rogen and Apatow Built a Run of Comedy Hits

Knocked Up was one entry in a run of films that repeatedly brought Rogen and Apatow together during the 2000s. Rogen appeared in Apatow's directorial debut, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, in 2005 before taking the lead in Knocked Up two years later. Their collaborations also included Superbad, which Rogen co-wrote and appeared in while Apatow produced, and Pineapple Express, which Rogen co-wrote and starred in with Apatow again serving as a producer.

The pair reunited on Funny People in 2009, with Apatow writing and directing and Rogen starring opposite Adam Sandler. Across those films, Rogen moved between supporting actor, leading man and screenwriter, while Apatow worked as a director, writer and producer. The projects became major entries in the 2000s comedy boom and gave Rogen repeated opportunities to develop the mix of crude humour and character-driven storytelling behind Apatow's unusual Knocked Up instruction.

'Less Semen, More Emotion' Still Fits Rogen's Current Work

The advice feels even more relevant now that Rogen has moved far beyond playing the slacker at the centre of an Apatow comedy. On The Studio, he serves as co-creator, writer, director and executive producer alongside Goldberg while also starring as beleaguered studio chief Matt Remick. The comedy became the most Emmy-winning freshman comedy in history, taking thirteen awards, including Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Rogen.

That career arc makes the Knocked Up story more than a throwback from a famously improvisational set. Rogen framed Apatow's line as a practical reminder that even deliberately crude comedy works best when the characters still have something real at stake. Nearly two decades later, he says the note still shapes how he approaches comedy: get the laugh, but keep the emotion intact.
