Jennifer Lawrence reveals return to 'Hunger Games' franchise @callherdaddy/Instagram

Jennifer Lawrence is returning as Katniss Everdeen, and she confirmed it herself on the Call Her Daddy podcast rather than through a studio press release. Speaking to host Alex Cooper, the Oscar winner revealed she has reunited with Josh Hutcherson and Woody Harrelson for The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, their first shoot together in more than a decade.

Her return is expected to be a Katniss Everdeen cameo drawn from the epilogue of Suzanne Collins' novel, not a lead role in a story set decades before her own. The interview also covered a very different subject, as Lawrence explained why she now challenges anything that crosses a line on set.

How Does Katniss Fit Into Sunrise on the Reaping?

Katniss is expected to appear in the present-day epilogue of Suzanne Collins' 2025 novel, a flash-forward in which an older Haymitch reconnects with her and Peeta after the Capitol's fall. The Haymitch Abernathy prequel follows a 16-year-old Haymitch during the 50th Hunger Games, 24 years before Katniss volunteers, so she cannot drive the central plot. Lionsgate has not detailed how much screen time she gets.

Reflecting on her return, Lawrence called stepping back into the franchise 'unbelievable' and described working alongside the original crew and assistant director as 'so emotional'. She also let slip that Harrelson reprises his role as the older Haymitch alongside the new cast—a detail Lionsgate hadn't officially confirmed before the episode. Hutcherson had previously noted in press tours that he would return to Panem 'in a heartbeat' if called back.

Sunrise on the Reaping Release Date and Cast

The film arrives in cinemas on 20 November 2026. It is the sixth film in the franchise, directed by Francis Lawrence, who has helmed every instalment since 2013's Catching Fire, from a script by Billy Ray and Michael Lesslie.

The Sunrise on the Reaping cast pairs the returning trio with a new ensemble: Joseph Zada as the young Haymitch, Ralph Fiennes as President Snow, Jesse Plemons as Plutarch Heavensbee, Kieran Culkin as Caesar Flickerman and Elle Fanning as Effie Trinket. Until Lawrence's interview, her return and Hutcherson's had been widely reported but never officially confirmed.

Set Safety and Nudity Protocols on Set

Her Call Her Daddy interview shows how much has changed since the first film reached cinemas in 2012, when she was in her early twenties. Lawrence recalled an unnamed earlier production where unapproved crew was on set while she filmed a nude scene, and said she 'came down hard' on it. She did not link the incident to The Hunger Games.

Her argument was about precedent. If someone of her standing does not enforce the rule, an '18-year-old unknown' must choose between speaking up and being seen as difficult, or staying silent. She now speaks up more because she understands her position in the industry.

That distinction separates personal consent from a failure of set security. Skipping an intimacy coordinator with a trusted co-star is an actor exercising individual choice; unapproved observers on a closed set represent a breakdown in basic protocol.

More than a decade after first stepping into Panem as a rising talent, Lawrence returns not just to reprise her signature role, but as an A-list veteran using her leverage to protect the next generation of performers. As Lionsgate builds toward the premiere of Sunrise on the Reaping, her return signals a franchise anchored by a star who commands authority both on screen and behind the scenes.
