When Jimmy Fallon welcomed Conor McGregor onto The Tonight Show, he likely expected the conversation to centre on the UFC star's long-awaited return to the Octagon. Instead, the appearance has triggered a wave of online backlash, with many viewers criticising the late-night host for giving the controversial fighter a platform.

The criticism has only intensified after Fallon continued posting other content across social media without mentioning McGregor's visit. That silence has led some fans to speculate that the interview is being quietly kept under wraps following the negative reaction it received.

Fans Question Fallon's Silence

While clips of the interview circulated online, Fallon did not share the usual promotional posts celebrating the guest, something viewers quickly noticed. Instead, the presenter uploaded an Instagram post looking back at a surprise stunt he filmed with Sir Paul McCartney in 2018. That decision prompted a flood of comments from followers asking why there was still no mention of McGregor.

One Instagram user wrote, 'Don't want to post McGregor @jimmyfallon? Why not?' Another commented, 'No post about having Conor McGregor on the show???' A third added that Fallon appeared to be avoiding the interview altogether, suggesting it looked as though it 'shouldn't have happened' in the first place.

The Interview Drew Backlash

Fallon warmly welcomed the fighter and even reminisced about the pair previously going out for drinks together, joking that they should do it again. McGregor appeared equally enthusiastic as he promoted his comeback fight against Max Holloway at UFC 329 on 11 July. 'I'm excited,' he said. 'Five years out of the game. I'm ready to rock.'

Speaking about his mindset heading back into the Octagon, McGregor added, 'You have to be calm. You have to be composed. You have to trust your training and your discipline. There's no hiding in the Octagon.' However, many viewers felt the interview focused entirely on his sporting return without acknowledging the serious controversy that has followed him in recent years.

The Controversial Appearance

The criticism largely stems from the civil sexual assault case involving Dublin woman Nikita Hand. In November 2024, an Irish jury found McGregor liable over an incident dating back to 2018 and awarded Hand €248,603 in damages. During the proceedings, Hand accused the former UFC champion of brutally raping and assaulting her in a Dublin hotel.

Medical evidence presented in court described significant injuries, with healthcare professionals telling jurors that Hand had extensive bruising and was visibly distressed when examined the following day. McGregor denied the allegations throughout the case, insisting the encounter had been consensual.

McGregor Continued To Deny Wrongdoing

Following the verdict, McGregor appealed the ruling. However, Ireland's Court of Appeal later dismissed his appeal, leaving the original civil judgment in place. After the verdict, the fighter acknowledged making personal mistakes but continued to reject the allegation itself.

Writing on X, he said he regretted aspects of his behaviour that evening, including responding to Hand's messages and stepping out on his longtime partner. At the same time, he maintained that everything which happened between them had been consensual.

Viewers Accused Fallon Of Platforming McGregor

For many critics, the issue is not simply that McGregor appeared on television, but that the interview felt light-hearted despite the controversy surrounding him. Several viewers accused Fallon of giving the fighter an opportunity to rebuild his public image without asking difficult questions.

Others branded the host 'spineless' and criticised the enthusiastic audience response, which included loud applause and cheers throughout the segment. The backlash has continued long after the broadcast ended, with many fans still questioning why Fallon has seemingly chosen not to highlight the interview across his social media channels.

McGregor's Busy Year Continues

Away from the controversy, the former two-division UFC champion recently married longtime partner Dee Devlin in Vatican City before officially confirming his comeback fight against Holloway, whom he first defeated back in 2013.

Whether Fallon's social media silence is intentional or simply routine remains unknown, as the host has not commented publicly. Even so, the absence of any promotional posts has become part of the story itself, with many viewers convinced the interview has quietly become one that both the programme and its presenter would rather leave behind.
