John Galliano has transformed Zara garments into near-couture creations, but a six-month-old concern from one Reddit user that the designer could send Zara prices soaring now looks particularly pointed, with the new collection reaching £699 (approximately $927).
John Galliano launches Re{form} Zara, Authored by the Couturier John Galliano on 1 October, marking the first collection from a two-year creative partnership between the designer and the Spanish high-street giant.
Rather than designing a completely new range from scratch, Galliano has taken existing Zara garments and dramatically reworked them using techniques associated with haute couture.
The result is a deliberately theatrical collection of transformed wardrobe staples, with oversized tailoring, reworked dresses, sheer fabrics, and accessories bearing Galliano's distinctive historical influences.
But the collaboration also raises a question that shoppers had been asking months before they had even seen the finished clothes: could bringing one of fashion's most celebrated couturiers to Zara push parts of the retailer's offering into a significantly higher price bracket?
From Zara Garments to 'Almost Haute Couture'
Galliano's unusual brief was to 're-author' existing Zara pieces rather than simply attach his name to a conventional designer capsule.
The designer selected garments from previous Zara collections and treated them as raw material, deconstructing, resizing, splicing and reconstructing them into new designs. British Vogue reported that the process included altering proportions, repositioning pockets and dramatically restructuring existing garments.
Galliano has described the approach as 'resampling, digital mixing,' comparing the process to the way hackers and DJs manipulate existing material.
The collection draws on his archive as well as historical references, including the flamboyant dress of post-Revolutionary France. The finished pieces include dramatic dresses, exaggerated tailoring, elongated accessories and sculptural silhouettes, contrasting sharply with the everyday pieces typically found across Zara's wider offering.
And while the collection is being positioned as a high-fashion experiment, it is not priced like traditional couture. Pieces are priced from £17.99 to £699 (around $24 to $927), with the most expensive designs reaching hundreds of pounds.
'Our Zara Pants Will Now Cost $200'
The pricing concern emerged long before the collection's launch.
In a Reddit discussion posted on 3 April, around six months before Re{form} arrived, one user described reactions ranging from excitement about 'making luxury more accessible' to the fear that 'it just means our Zara pants will now cost $200' or around £150.
The comment was therefore an early reaction to the announcement of Galliano's partnership, rather than a response to the collection's current prices.
Other commenters at the time questioned whether the collaboration would genuinely benefit Zara customers or simply allow the brand to charge more for designer association and hype.
One commenter argued that Galliano's name would not make Zara a luxury brand but could encourage shoppers to pay more, while another suggested the project could bring more distinctive designs and higher price points.
New Way of Reaching a Broader Audience
The discussion was far from uniformly negative. Other users pointed to the long history of designer collaborations with high-street retailers and argued that such projects can give younger or lower-budget shoppers access to influential designers.
Now, with the collection actually launching, the '$200 Zara pants' comment can be viewed in context rather than as a prediction of a specific price.
The Re{form} range does not put every piece at luxury prices, but its most expensive designs reach £699, creating a stark contrast with the collection's £17.99 entry point.
For Galliano, the project offers a new way of reaching a broader audience. The collaboration places high-fashion design, reworked garments and elevated craftsmanship within Zara's retail platform.
Whether shoppers embrace the collection's higher prices alongside its couture-inspired design remains an open question as Re{form} reaches customers.
