Kate Middleton has given a 2016 Jenny Packham gown a glamorous second life, but with one striking alteration that makes the look noticeably more demure.
The Princess of Wales stepped onto the red carpet with Prince William at the London premiere of Tom Cruise's new film Digger on Tuesday, 22 September. For the occasion, she wore a flowing purple Jenny Packham gown that originally appeared in the designer's autumn/winter 2016 collection.
A Familiar Silhouette
While the silhouette remained instantly recognisable, Kate's version was not a replica of the runway look. The most obvious change was at the shoulders, where the original design featured cut-out details. Those openings were closed on Kate's gown, creating a more covered neckline and shoulder line while preserving some of the original design's drama.

The choice of Jenny Packham was also fitting given the designer's long relationship with the Princess. Packham has become one of Kate's most recognisable eveningwear choices, with the royal repeatedly returning to the label for major public appearances.
For the Digger premiere, Kate paired the purple gown with pearl-drop earrings and a dramatic historic necklace. She appeared to wear the Queen Mother's amethyst sautoir necklace, a piece with royal provenance that has previously been worn by Queen Camilla.
Prince William complemented his wife's formal look in a velvet double-breasted dinner jacket. The couple joined Cruise at the premiere of Digger at the ODEON Luxe Leicester Square, turning the event into one of their more glamorous joint appearances of the year.

The evening also marked another red-carpet reunion between the Royal Couple and Cruise. Kate and William have previously attended events connected with the Mission: Impossible star, making their appearance alongside him a familiar celebrity-royal combination.
